Wright address the harsh, challenging, and delicate realities of children and youth-who live as spiritual beings within a beautiful yet destructive world. Providing a practical theological analysis of the spiritual yearnings, expressions, and challenges of children and youth in a world of rapid change, dislocation, violence, and competing loyalties, Children, Youth, and Spirituality in a Troubling World provides readers with a purposeful conversation on this important topic. This book will serve as more than a collection; it will be a genuine conversation, which will in turn stir lively conversation among scholars, theological students, and Christian communities that seek to understand and respond more adequately in ministries to and with children and youth. Contributors include: Claire Bischoff, Susanne Johnson, Jennie S. Knight, Bonnie Miller-McLemore, Mary Elizabeth Moore, Joyce Ann Mercer, Veronice Miles, Rodger Nishioka, Evelyn Parker, Luther E. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child lays down the right of children to form their own opinions, as well as the right to express these opinions. In the light of this, the Ombudsman for Children in Sweden has created Young Speakers – a qualitative method which recognises and elevates the voices of young people, without adult adjustment or correction. The rationale for the method is that children are experts on their own lives and have important information to share with decision makers. It is about listening to reflections, nuances, and in-depth stories that are difficult to understand and take into account without going into detail. By listening to different people tell their personal stories about the same topics, patterns, trends, and shortcomings can be identified.

Summary Book Review The Native Speaker Concept by Neriko Musha Doerr:

Download or read book The Native Speaker Concept written by Neriko Musha Doerr and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "native speaker" is often thought of as an ideal language user with "a complete and possibly innate competence in the language" which is perceived as being bounded and fixed to a homogeneous speech community and linked to a nation-state. Despite recent works that challenge its empirical accuracy and theoretical utility, the notion of the "native speaker" is still prevalent today. The Native Speaker Concept shifts the analytical focus from the second language acquisition processes and teaching practices to daily interactions situated in wider sociocultural and political contexts marked by increased global movements of people and multilingual situations. Using an ethnographic approach, the volume critically elucidates the political nature of (not) claiming the "native speaker" status in daily life and the ways the ideology of "native speaker" intersects and articulates, supports, subverts, or complicates various relations of dominance and regimes of standardization. The book offers cases from diverse settings, including classrooms in Japan, a coffee shop in Barcelona, secondary schools in South Africa, a backyard in Rapa Nui (Easter Island), restaurant kitchens, a high school administrator's office, a college classroom in the United States, and the Internet. It also offers a genealogy of the notion of the "native speaker" from the time of the Roman Empire. Employing linguistic, anthropological and educational theories, the volume speaks not only to the analyses of language use and language policy, planning, and teaching, but also to the investigation of wider effects of language ideology on relations of dominance, and institutional and discursive practices.

Summary Book Review New Speakers of Minority Languages by Cassie Smith-Christmas:

Download or read book New Speakers of Minority Languages written by Cassie Smith-Christmas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first collection specifically devoted to New Speaker Studies, focusing on language ideologies and practices of speakers in a variety of minority language communities. Over thirteen chapters, it uses the new speaker lens to investigate not only linguistic issues, such as language variation and change, phonetics, morphosyntax, language acquisition, code-switching, but also sociolinguistic issues, such as legitimacy, integration, and motivation in language learning and use. Besides covering a range of languages - Basque, Breton, Galician, Giernesiei, Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh - and their different sociolinguistic situations, the chapters also encompass a series of interactional settings: institutional settings, media and the home domain, as well as different contexts for becoming a new speaker of a minority language, such as by migration or through education. This collection represents an output by a lively network of researchers: it will appeal to postgraduate students, researchers and academics working in the field of sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, language policy and those working within minority language communities.
