Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photo-illustrated record of Chilean protest art, along with reflections on artistic antecedents, global protest movements, and the long shadow cast by Chile’s authoritarian past. “This is an excellent and unique contribution to our understanding of protest art. It is the first substantive treatment in English of an important social movement and a significant contribution to the political impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.”—T.V. Reed, Washington State University From October 2019 until the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, Chile was convulsed by protests and political upheaval, as what began as civil disobedience transformed into a vast resistance movement. Throughout, the most striking aspects of the protests were the murals, graffiti, and other political graphics that became ubiquitous in Chilean cities. Authors Terri Gordon-Zolov and Eric Zolov were in Santiago to witness and document the protests from their very beginning. The book is beautifully illustrated with over 150 photographs taken throughout the protests. Additional photos will be available on the publisher’s website. From the introduction: In the conclusion, we take stock of the crisis of the nation-state in the contemporary era. This chapter brings events into the present moment, noting the ways President Piñera took advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to reclaim the streets of Santiago, a phenomenon echoed in countries across the globe. While most of the global protest movements were forced to go underground (or into the ether), the Black Lives Matter movement surged in the United States and drew massive amounts of support both domestically and abroad, suggesting a continued wave of grassroots protests. We close with reflections on the continued relevance of walls in a virtual world, the testimonial role that protest graphics play, and the future outlook for revolutionary movements in Chile and worldwide.

Summary Book Review Domain Walls by Dennis Meier:

Download or read book Domain Walls written by Dennis Meier and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technological evolution and revolution are both driven by the discovery of new functionalities, new materials and the design of yet smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient components. Progress is being made at a breathtaking pace, stimulated by the rapidly growing demand for more powerful and readily available information technology. High-speed internet and data-streaming, home automation, tablets and smartphones are now "necessities" for our everyday lives. Consumer expectations for progressively more data storage and exchange appear to be insatiable. Oxide electronics is a promising and relatively new field that has the potential to trigger major advances in information technology. Oxide interfaces are particularly intriguing. Here, low local symmetry combined with an increased susceptibility to external fields leads to unusual physical properties distinct from those of the homogeneous bulk. In this context, ferroic domain walls have attracted recent attention as a completely new type of oxide interface. In addition to their functional properties, such walls are spatially mobile and can be created, moved, and erased on demand. This unique degree of flexibility enables domain walls to take an active role in future devices and hold a great potential as multifunctional 2D systems for nanoelectronics. With domain walls as reconfigurable electronic 2D components, a new generation of adaptive nano-technology and flexible circuitry becomes possible, that can be altered and upgraded throughout the lifetime of the device. Thus, what started out as fundamental research, at the limit of accessibility, is finally maturing into a promising concept for next-generation technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant cell walls are composed of complex carbohydrates, proteins, phenolic compounds, and inorganic ions, all of which play functional roles. Cellulose (1,4-fO-glucan) and callose (1,3-fO-glucan) are synthesized in the plasma membrane, while other polysaccharides are synthesized in the Golgi. Plant cell growth occurs with the loosening of the walls, which may be caused by several enzymatic actions. Plant development is related to the morphological changes of cells and tissue, which is caused by structural changes of the walls."

This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Athens, most remains of the ancient city-wall were revealed during rescue excavations; as a result, documentation is scattered and fragmented. This book systematically investigates all published data, revealing the history and the nature of the surviving remains of this significant monument. The book provides an analysis of the ancient literary sources, the western travellers’ accounts, and the history of archaeological research on the circuit walls of ancient Athens. It collects, records, and maps all archaeological data from systematic and rescue excavations of the physical remains of the wall as it evolved over eleven centuries and through more than a dozen construction phases. It reviews issues relating to structure, chronology and topography of the ancient city wall, as well as to the management of its remains by the state authorities. The enormous amount of primary evidence makes the book essential reading for scholars of the topography of ancient Athens. This monograph also aspires to increase community awareness of cultural heritage in everyday urban contexts, as the wall has been preserved in a number of ways: in basements of buildings, reburied in situ, in the open air or beneath glass floors.

Book excerpt: Traversing Walls will help you -provide core activities to physically prepare participants to climb, -challenge participants' bodies and minds at the same time, -select activities to meet your group's needs and levels, and -find activities that meet NASPE standards. Traverse wall climbing--in which most of the climbing is done horizontally--is quickly growing in popularity because it is exhilarating, challenging, and fun. Yet, specific games and activities for traverse walls have been hard to find--until now. Traversing Walls provides you with 68 engaging activities that you can use to implement traverse wall climbing. Included are these features: -Core strength activities to help kids physically prepare to climb -Dome cone and other lead-up activities to keep kids active even when they're not climbing -Traverse wall activities with cross-curricular connections that will stimulate your participants' bodies and minds at the same time--so the kids are thinking and learning while having fun on the wall The authors provide numerous suggestions for expanding on the games and ideas presented in the book, too. In fact, virtually any intellectual ability, academic task, popular game, or equipment can be incorporated into climbing activities, and many teachers have combined the activities with other subject matter, such as math and geography. The book contains dozens of activities and variations, including well-known games and those that incorporate numbers, letters, math, and words. Some games reinforce health concepts, such as nutrition and the MyPyramid food chart, muscles and exercise, human body systems (muscles and organs), human skeletal system, and appropriate health behaviors. All of the activities promote healthy, fun, and productive learning in which everyone can succeed. The ground-level and traverse activities will help your class meet NASPE standards So go encourage your participants to climb the wall! They'll encounter physical and intellectual challenges along the way, gain strength and confidence as they acquire new skills, and have loads of fun that is connected to learning.

Download or read book Physiology and Biochemistry of Plant Cell Walls written by Christopher T. Brett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-07-31 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plant cell wall plays a vital role in almost every aspect of plant physiology. New techniques in spectroscopy, biophysics and molecular biology have revealed the extraordinary complexity of its molecular architecture and just how important this structure is in the control of plant growth and development. The Second Edition of this accessible and integrated textbook has been revised and updated throughout. As well as focusing on the structure and function of plant cell walls the book also looks at the applications of this research. It discusses how plant cell walls can be exploited by the biotechnology industry and some of the main challenges for future research. Key topics include: architecture and skeletal functions of the wall; cell-wall formation; control of cell growth; role in intracellular transport; interactions with other organisms; cell-wall degradation; biotechnological applications of cell-walls; role in diet and health. This textbook provides a clear, well illustrated introduction to the physiology and biochemistry of plant cell walls which will be invaluable to upper level undergraduate and post graduate students of plant physiology, plant pathology, plant biotechnology and biochemistry.
