Summary Book Review United States Special Operations Forces by David Tucker:

Download or read book United States Special Operations Forces written by David Tucker and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007-09-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October and November of 2001, small numbers of soldiers from the Army Special Forces entered Afghanistan, linked up with elements of the Northern Alliance (an assortment of Afghanis opposed to the Taliban), and, in a remarkably short period of time, destroyed the Taliban regime. Trained to work with indigenous forces and personnel like the Northern Alliance, these soldiers, sometimes riding on horseback, combined modern military technology with ancient techniques of central Asian warfare in what was later described as "the first cavalry charge of the twenty-first century." In this engaging book, two national security experts and Department of Defense insiders put the exploits of America's special operation forces in historical and strategic context. David Tucker and Christopher J. Lamb offer an incisive overview of America's turbulent experience with special operations. Using in-depth interviews with special operators at the forefront of the current war on terrorism and providing a detailed account of how they are selected and trained, the authors illustrate the diversity of modern special operations forces and the strategic value of their unique attributes. From the first chapter, this book builds toward a set of recommendations for reforms that would allow special operations forces to make a greater contribution to the war on terrorism and play a more strategic role in safeguarding the nation's security. Along the way, the authors explain why special operations forces are:" Distinguished by characteristics not equally valued by their own leadership" Strategically crucial because of two mutually supporting but undeniably distinct sets of capabilities not found in conventional forces" Not to be confused with the CIA and so-called paramilitary forces, nor with the Marines and other elite forces" Unable to learn from the 1993 failed intervention in Somalia and the national-oversight issues it revealed" Better integrated into the nation's military strategy and operations than ever before but confused about their core missions in the war on terror" Not "transformed" for future challenges as many assert but rather in need of organizational reforms to realize their strategic potential Despite longstanding and growing public fascination with special operators, these individuals and the organizations that employ them are little understood. With this book, Tucker and Lamb dispel common misconceptions and offer a penetrating analysis of how these unique and valuable forces can be employed to even better effect in the future.

Summary Book Review Special Operations Forces in the 21st Century by Jessica Glicken Turnley:

Download or read book Special Operations Forces in the 21st Century written by Jessica Glicken Turnley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out the major social scientific approaches to the study of Special Operations Forces. Despite consistent downsizing, over the past two decades the armed forces of the industrial democracies have seen a huge growth in Special Operations Forces (SOF). Through increasing numbers of personnel and more frequent deployments, SOF units have wielded considerable influence in conflicts around the world, with senior SOF officers having led major strategic operations. This increased presence and unprecedented expansion for SOF is largely a result of the 'new' kinds of conflicts that have emerged in the 21st century. At the same time, even with this high profile in the military, policy and media and popular cultural arenas, there is relatively little social scientific research on SOF. This volume aims to fill this gap by providing a series of studies and analyses of SOF across the globe, since the end of World War II. Analysing SOF at the micro, mezzo and macro levels provides broad and diverse insights. Moreover, the volume deals with new issues raised by the use of such forces that include emerging modes of civilian control, innovative organizational forms and the special psychological characteristics necessitated by SOF operatives. It concludes with a discussion of a question which continues to be debated in today's militaries: what makes SOF 'special'? Filling a clear gap in the literature, this book will be of much interest to students of strategic studies, civil-military relations, irregular warfare, security studies, and international relations.

This book was released on 2014-04-19 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dogs have competently served military ventures for over 2500 years. At one time during WWII, there were nearly 15,000 trained military working dogs in the U.S. inventory serving a broad range of duties from patrolling to delivering messages. Today the U.S. military maintains fewer than 1,400 dogs.1 Although historic declines in dog utilization are apparent, today's operational environment clearly begs for an enhanced military working dog capability-particularly with U.S. Special Operations forces. Technology preempted the decline of military working dog usage. During the Cold War, the Warsaw Pact's numerical equipment superiority encouraged the development of equipment and doctrine designed to intercept and kill the enemy in depth in a high intensity conflict. Accordingly, the U.S. military focused on sophisticated technological solutions. The dog as a low-technology system saw little development during this period. As a result, military working dogs had limited use in an era of bipolar superpowers and nuclear brinkmanship

Book excerpt: THE AMERICAN WAY OF SPECIAL OPERATIONS WARFIGHTING Current edition ADP 3-05, big 8.5" x 11" format - large, clear text & illustrations. "Batteries last hours, books last decades. Get the print edition!" ADP 3-05, Special Operations, describes the role of United States Army Special Operations Forces (ARSOF) in the U.S. Army's operating concept to Shape operational environments in the countries and regions of consequence, Prevent conflict through the application of special operations and conventional deterrence, and when necessary help Win our nation's wars. It will outline ARSOF's requirement to provide in the nation's defense unequalled Surgical Strike and Special Warfare capabilities. Together these two different but mutually supporting forms of special operations comprise the American Way of Special Operations Warfighting. The relevance of Army Special Operations Forces has never been greater. They are the cornerstones to the Joint Forces fighting our nation's wars, maintaining alliances, building partner nation capacity, developing surrogate capabilities, or conducting unilateral special operations. The future will likely increase SOF's role at not only the tactical level but also at the operational level as the requirement for long-term SOF campaigns grows. So long as belligerent nations continue to employ nonconventional means against us and terrorist networks continue their efforts to strike our homeland and our interests abroad, ARSOF will remain an indispensable member of the joint and interagency team. Book excerpt: Field Manual (FM) 3-05.130, Army Special Operations Forces Unconventional Warfare, establishes keystone doctrine for Army special operations forces (ARSOF) operations in unconventional warfare (UW). It is basedon lessons learned from both historical and contemporary UW operations. It is also based on existing, long-standing Army Special Forces (SF) UW doctrine; recently developed doctrine, such as counterinsurgency (COIN); and emerging affiliated concepts, such as irregular warfare (IW).Since 11 September 2001 and the onset of the War on Terrorism (WOT), existing UW doctrinal publications have undergone intense scrutiny and timely revision. A majority of existing ARSOF manuals have incorporated recent lessons learned and updated tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) of immediate utility to the conductof war. For this reason, the Army has classified most of these revised manuals. UW remains an enduring and effective means of warfighting and is recognized as a central effort in the WOT. Although the classification of existing doctrine is prudent for operational security, it limits the distribution of concepts necessary for aneffective joint, interagency, and multinational effort. ARSOF and other audiences require an unclassified conceptual manual useful to understanding the nature of UW and its role in the nation's application of power. This manual provides that unclassified conceptual treatment.ARSOF execute and are the functional proponent for UW under United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Directive 10-1, Terms of Reference for Component Commanders, and other authorities. Currently, there exists no authoritative interagency or joint doctrine specifically for UW-although sufficient joint doctrine does exist for general campaign design and execution of joint and Army operations. This manual is the overarching doctrinal reference that specifically addresses UW as conducted by ARSOF. Detailed TTP for UWcan be found in FM 3-05.201, (S/NF) Special Forces Unconventional Warfare (U). The first chapter establishes what UW is and includes a comparison of traditional and emerging concepts withwhich UW is sometimes confused. Chapter 2 discusses the international environment and United States (U.S.) instruments of national power within which all military operations-including UW-occur. Chapter 3 addresses policy and doctrine that define, enable, and constrain UW. Chapter 4 outlines planning considerations for UW.The next three chapters provide a more focused operational discussion of ARSOF's three main component disciplines: SF operations, Psychological Operations (PSYOP), and Civil Affairs operations (CAO). Chapter 8, which concerns supporting elements and activities of UW, concludes the basic manual. The appendixes contain useful supplemental information. The first seven appendixes (A-G) provide expanded and detailed information on U.S. instruments of national power within the broader context of the international environment. Appendix H is a survey of definitions and current academic considerations concerning historical and cultural concepts usefulto the assessment of human environments. Appendix I provides a historical survey of UW. Appendix J contains an outline sketch of change and constancy in the definition of UW. Current doctrinal references and an expanded bibliography provide a guide for further reading and mature understanding of UW within the endeavor of war. Both the text and the Glossary identify terms that have joint or Army definitions. FM 3-05.130 is the proponent field manual (the authority) for UW, but is not the proponent for any other Army term.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991 the United States and coalition forces liberated Kuwait after its brief occupation by Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. One of the abiding memories of that conflict was the activities of the coalition’s special forces soldiers deep in Iraq, hunting down SCUD missiles and their launchers before they could be fired on Israel. Since that date, elite military formations have played an increasingly important role in the policing of the modern world. Special Forces in Action is a detailed account of the operations of the world’s special forces over the last 20 years. From the Gulf War to the invasion of Iraq, via the war in Afghanistan, the search for war criminals in the Balkans, the drug baron hunting in South America, hostage rescues in Africa, and the counter-terrorist initiatives since 9/11, and the killing of Osama Bin Laden, the book brings the reader full details of the often clandestine activities of the world’s elite soldiers. Illustrated with action photographs, Special Forces in Action shows how the world’s special forces have become a vital part of any government’s military machine, and the parts they have played in recent world events. With an authoritative text and rare photographs, the book is a highly illustrated guide to the recent operations of these most secretive – and successful – soldiers.
