Summary Book Review John Masefield by Muriel Spark:

Download or read book John Masefield written by Muriel Spark and published by Carcanet Press Ltd. This book was released on 2016-05-15 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before she published her distinguished novels, Muriel Spark first made her name as a critic and poet. Her discerning study of the poet and novelist John Masefield will therefore be doubly welcome, as an example of her earlier work, and as one of the best introductions to Masefield. With characteristic insight, Spark shows Masefield’s development as a storyteller, through his early lyrics to his long narrative poems and finally his prose, together with his gift for observation of the life around him. // John Masefield (1878–1967) lived a life as varied as his work. At the age of fifteen he went to sea as an apprentice in a windjammer and made the voyage round Cape Horn. The next three years he spent in New York, in a bakery, a livery stable, a saloon and a carpet factory. Back in England, he wrote for the Guardian and in the First World War served with the Red Cross. Throughout these years he had been writing poetry, and when in 1923 his Collected Poems appeared they sold over 200,000 copies. In 1930 he succeeded Robert Bridges as Poet Laureate. He was a prodigious novelist, essayist and poet; among his best known works are The Everlasting Mercy, Dauber, Reynard the Fox, Sard Harker and The Midnight Folk. // ‘I feel a large amount of my writing on him can be applied generally’, wrote Spark in 1992: ‘It is in many ways a statement of my position as a literary critic and I hope some readers will recognise it as such.’ // ‘Spark shows herself to be as fearless and original a biographer as she was a novelist.’ Times Literary Supplement

Summary Book Review In Ballast to the White Sea by Malcolm Lowry:

Download or read book In Ballast to the White Sea written by Malcolm Lowry and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ballast to the White Sea is Malcolm Lowry’s most ambitious work of the mid-1930s. Inspired by his life experience, the novel recounts the story of a Cambridge undergraduate who aspires to be a writer but has come to believe that both his book and, in a sense, his life have already been “written.” After a fire broke out in Lowry’s squatter’s shack, all that remained of In Ballast to the White Sea were a few sheets of paper. Only decades after Lowry’s death did it become known that his first wife, Jan Gabrial, still had a typescript. This scholarly edition presents, for the first time, the once-lost novel. Patrick McCarthy’s critical introduction offers insight into Lowry’s sense of himself while Chris Ackerley’s extensive annotations provide important information about Lowry’s life and art in an edition that will captivate readers and scholars alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 4 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Download or read book Routledge Revivals: Neglected Powers (1971) written by G. Wilson Knight and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1971, Professor Knight’s book draws analytic attention to poets including Tennyson, Masefield, and Brooke, who are shown to hold a dimension of meaning previously ignored or misunderstood. Homage is paid to John Cowper Powys as one of the foremost seers of the modern age. A comprehensive review of the work of Francis Berry claims to establish him as our foremost living poet. Professor Knight urges, and goes far to prove, that modern literary criticism up until the 1970s failed to touch upon the richer meanings of contemporary literature – he stresses the relation between such acclaimed poets as Yeats and Eliot and the spiritualistic movements of contemporary times. Knight regards youth-revolts as a sign of a healthy dissatisfaction with an irreligious and directionless culture, and believes that hope lies in the neglected powers pressing for acceptance.

Aimed primarily at the family and social historian, Mike Royden's highly readable guide introduces readers to the wealth of material available on the citys history and its people. In a series of short, information-packed chapters he describes, in vivid detail, the rise of Liverpool through shipping, manufacturing and trade from the original fishing village to the cosmopolitan metropolis of the present day. Throughout he concentrates on the lives of the local people on their experience as Liverpool developed around them. He looks at their living conditions, at poverty and the laboring poor, at health and the ravages of disease, at the influence of religion and migration, at education and the traumatic experience of war. He shows how the lives of Liverpudlians changed over the centuries and how this is reflected in the records that have survived. His useful book is a valuable tool for anyone researching the history of the city or the life of an individual ancestor.
