Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Popular Music and Its Unruly Entanglements comprises eleven essays that explore the myriad ways in which popular music is entwined within social, cultural, musical, historical, and media networks. The authors discuss genres as diverse as mainstream pop, hip hop, classic rock, instrumental synthwave, video game music, amateur ukelele groups, and audiovisual remixes, while also considering the music’s relationship to technological developments, various media and material(itie)s, and personal and social identity. The collection presents a range of different methodologies and theoretical positions, which results in an eclecticism that aptly demonstrates the breadth of contemporary popular music research. The chapters are divided into three major sections that address: wider theoretical and analytical issues (“Broad Strokes”), familiar repertoire or concepts from a new perspective (“Second Takes”), and the meanings to arise from music’s connections with other media forms (“Audiovisual Entanglements”).

This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular music scholars have long been interested in the connection between place and music. This collection brings together a number of key scholars in order to introduce readers to concepts and theories used to explore the relationships between place and music. An interdisciplinary volume, drawing from sociology, geography, ethnomusicology, media, cultural, and communication studies, this book covers a wide-range of topics germane to the production and consumption of place in popular music. Through considerations of changes in technology and the mediascape that have shaped the experience of popular music (vinyl, iPods, social media), the role of social difference and how it shapes sociomusical encounters (queer spaces, gendered and racialised spaces), as well as the construction and representations of place (musical tourism, city branding, urban mythologies), this is an up-to-the-moment overview of central discussions about place and music. The contributors explore a range of contexts, moving from the studio to the stage, the city to the suburb, the bedroom to festival, from nightclub to museum, with each entry highlighting the diverse and complex ways in which music and place are mutually constitutive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dogs Playing Cards" begins with a survey of Western civilization that expands the traditional borders of the subject by including voices of women and other heretofore silenced groups. Rather than relying only on written history, this survey uses the artistic record as its primary database. Following the survey, oppression in its contemporary forms is examined as it manifests itself in art, capitalism, censorship, education, race, sex, and violence.

Summary Book Review Photography and Painting in the Work of Gerhard Richter by B. H. D. Buchloh:

Download or read book Photography and Painting in the Work of Gerhard Richter written by B. H. D. Buchloh and published by Actar. This book was released on 2000 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication brings together four texts which analyze Gerhard Richter's monumental project Atlas, an assemblage of photographs that he has collected since 1962. Atlas, which at present comprises more than 5,000 images -- ranging from political portraits to landscapes and from found photojournalistic pictures to photographs taken by the artist himself -- constitutes an ordered collection of personal visual memories from which Richter draws the themes and motifs for his ongoing exploration of the possibilities of painting. Buchloh examines Atlas as a mnemonic device, comparing Richter's assemblage to Aby Warburg's 1927 monumental project on collective memory; Chevrier distinguishes European and American uses of photography and art and positions Richter's work in contrast to that of the Photorealists and American Pop artists; Zweite discusses Atlas as a response to the tension between semantics and semiotics in Modernism; and Rochlitz analyses the complex relationship between photography and painting in contemporary art with specific reference to Richter's works Ema and Betty.
