Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is unusual for a novelist to choose God for the main ghost character of his book. Yet any truly literate reader of the Hebrew Bible will discover that the Bible is a literary book whose central character is the personality of God. The Bible opens with His revealing his powerful presence by saying “In the beginning,” and going on to declaim who He is and what He has done. All the central episodes of the Biblical stories, while involving narrations of those who peopled his plans and activities, are centered on his words and his deeds. These are the main elements of the Bible even though human stories abound. Indeed, on can posit that this book is an extraordinarily long, one act drama in which there is only one character who soliloquizes his experiences of being the Father of the universe. He retells with great emotional involvement what happened to Him when He decided to make a natural world full of creatures and then decided to add surrogate beings to share it with Him. Here the soliloquy becomes very dramatic because humans rebelled in their very first instance of their being and thus became alien to him. He became angry, took destructive actions that demonstrated his powers but often produced compliance driven by fear. Despite this blemish, He tells the reader He was not ready to let go of His absolute Fatherhood. So He began to undertake prodigious but eventually frustrating efforts to win human love and allegiance. He chose one tribal family as His witness to His supreme divinity. His strategic goal was to specially develop a family covenant with a chosen people; He would be their one and only Father- counselor in all aspects their of lives. In return He would give them their own tribal land and a kingdom. It was a troubled covenant. This tactic brought Him into many human conflicts that forced Him to become variously a liberator, a general, a destroyer, even a conqueror and executioner, often a peace maker. His plan succeeded for a period, His wishes fulfilled. At least one human tribe truly witnessed Him and Him only. But again the human side of the covenant failed, His chosen people dispersed once more into the spiritual deserts of the alien world. So full of sadness, frustration, and disappointment, the voice of the divine soliloquist falls into near silence. His soliloquy is now remembered through the echoed, hailing words handed over to his prophets. The ghost text of this Divine comedy was written down in a book called the Bible. Can these third person words have their divine author’s mysterious, furious powers of his Word? The novel, “The Mysterious God in a Tent,” is about the spiritual struggle that occurs when a very dedicated reader, near his death, encounters this powerful Biblical soliloquy, the voice of a deific personality whose voice is the essence of this story-- the majesty of words and the Word.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories in the first half of the book of Daniel are Sunday School favorites, and the visions of the second half are sometimes hard to understand. How do either of them relate to the world today, with its frequent news of conflict, injustice, and human suffering? In Glimpsing the Mystery, Barbara M. Leung Lai succinctly takes readers through Daniel, showing throughout how God responds to the needs of his people in difficult times. In a world that seems out of control, God provides glimpses into the mystery of his glory and sovereignty, showing that he has not stopped working and reassuring us that he is still the God of gods and Lord of lords. It is a message that is as necessary today as it was in Daniel’s time.

Download or read book Apocalypse written by Pablo Richard and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation has always been a mysterious and intriguing book, describing in symbolic terms the confrontation between the Disciples of Christ and the powers - political and supernatural - that hold sway over the current age. Fundamentalists have been attracted to the book and have sought to decipher its strange symbols as coded prophecy of future events. But as Pablo Richard shows in Apocalypse, the most powerful readings of the Book of Revelation are through the eyes of the oppressed, living out their Christian faith in the context of the modern empire. It is they who identify most strongly with Revelation's ultimate message of hope and life in the midst of death and persecution. Apocalypse first provides a general introduction to the reading of Revelation by examining three keys for its understanding: the historical, he sociological, and the literary-structural. The book then goes on to explore the whole of the Book of Revelation, following the book's own structure. Each section provides a line-by-line reading of the text, establishing the literal meaning before applying the interpretive keys already established.

Book excerpt: The scion of a coal-mining empire sides against his family in the bloody fight to unionize Colorado’s mines in this gripping sequel to King Coal The son of a prominent coal magnate, Hal Warner is horrified by the dangerous working conditions, long hours, and starvation wages endured by the men who toil in his family’s mines. He tries to rouse other members of his privileged class to a similar state of indignation, but soon faces a much more severe test of his progressivism. When a labor group organizes a massive strike and the mining companies respond with punishing brutality, Hal’s commitment to the cause of reform becomes a matter of life and death. The Coal War is Upton Sinclair’s searing follow-up to King Coal. Based on events surrounding the Ludlow Massacre of 1914, it dramatizes one of the most significant conflicts between labor and capital in American history and offers an unflinching look at the shocking realities of a miner’s life in the early twentieth century. Published posthumously, this powerful and tragic novel is one of Sinclair’s finest. This ebook has been authorized by the estate of Upton Sinclair.

Book excerpt: The discovery of two headless corpses dressed in colonial clothing and locked in a grisly embrace draws Detectives Miranda Quin and David Morgan of the Toronto Police Service into a Gothic mixture of sex and death that ultimately threatens their survival. What if the difference between good and evil is only perception? Beginning with morbid curiosity, Miranda and Morgan get caught up in a story of inspired depravity. Through revelations in such diverse locations as a Toronto demolition site, a lonely farmhouse on Georgian Bay, the crypt of a derelict church, and inside the murky depths of a shipwreck, this perverse account of love, lust, and murder builds to a horrific crescendo. Seduced by their own personal demons, Quin and Morgan might not find their considerable skills and strong bonds enough this time to help them overcome the terrors that await.
