Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dalai Lama tells the life story of his remarkable teacher, Ling Rinpoché, who remained a powerful anchor for him from childhood and into his emergence as a global spiritual leader. The Sixth Ling Rinpoché (1903–83) was a towering figure in Tibetan Buddhism. Combining great learning with great humility, he was ordained by the Thirteenth Dalai Lama and went on to serve as the the head of the Geluk tradition and as the senior tutor to the present Dalai Lama. In temperament and wisdom, he had a profound influence on the Dalai Lama’s spiritual development, and he became a steadying presence for His Holiness during the chaotic changes that defined the Tibetan experience of the twentieth century, with the invasion of their county by Communist forces and the subsequent rebuilding of their culture in India. Ling Rinpoché’s extensive travels among exiled communities abroad and across India bouyed the spirits of the Tibetan diaspora, and the training and activities of this consummate Buddhist master, here told by the Dalai Lama in the traditional Tibetan style, will inspire and amaze. Over one hundred archival photos bring the text to life.

Book excerpt: In ‘Wow, my teacher is a horse!’, scientifically based theory and practical examples clearly explain how the horse can play a role in strengthening executive functions through experiential learning. Since 2004 Paulien Rutgers has been working in horse-assisted interventions which aim to encourage children with specific needs to develop their strenghts and abilities. More than half of these children suffer from school dropout and/or risky behavior. They need support for one or more executive functions, with feedback to their family and school. Horses have a positive effect on the learning ability, the self-reflection and the awareness of these children. In this book, Paulien Rutgers brings together all her experience and the results of her search for the explanation of the effect that horses have on the behaviour and cognition of the target group. She attended national and international symposia, lectures and courses, studied articles and books, conducted passionate interviews with researchers and colleagues, resulting in a conclusive theory which translates into practice. This is an indispensable book for students of Animal Assisted Therapy courses, of applied social studies, pedagogy and psychology as well as for teachers in those studies, as for professionals in the field of animals in care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we demonstrate a mode of teacher education that is practical in a non-technical sense and relies on Dewey's notion of curriculum as the reconstruction of experience. We present a curriculum that emerged through collaborative self-reflection and seeks to reconstruct personal histories of schooling. As four former preservice teachers and their instructor, we engaged in jointly constructed autobiographical inquiry in order to generate data on our own past and on our current histories of teaching and learning. We wanted to illuminate parts of our lives in schools that until now belonged to our 'normal' and taken-for-granted past. We did this in order to enjoy certain degrees of awareness and choice as to which of our living stories to reinforce and which to "let run out" in our classrooms today.

Download or read book Voices of Inquiry in Teacher Education written by Thomas S. Poetter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to show that preservice teacher knowledge is substantive and should be part of the wider database of knowledge about teaching and learning in the field of teacher education. From the perspectives of five prospective teacher interns and a teacher educator, this volume brings the experiences of students conducting research during preservice teacher education to life. Charged to conduct a semester long study in the school, the intern-authors studied classroom scenes and their own work, and wrote case studies depicting their experiences. Their pieces -- in their entirety -- compose the central chapters of the book and serve as examples of preservice teacher research. The surrounding chapters examine the interns' experiences of conducting research during their preservice internship year primarily from the perspective of a teacher educator who studied them and the scene throughout the experience. The teacher educator examines the interns' approaches to research and the processes they employed to conduct and complete their studies, the interns' professional growth as a result of their participation in the study, and the impact the project had on the program. This book fills the gaps that exist in the present literature on the use of teacher research during preservice by including the inquiry works of preservice teachers as examples of legitimate, important preliminary research in their own rights, and by addressing the complex issues of conducting this type of study during preservice from multiple perspectives, not just that of the university researcher. While some texts include the perspectives of students and even include portions of students' own work, this text takes the step of co-authorship, sharing the academic discourse with intern teachers who have produced experience and knowledge that are informative for the field of education as a whole and specifically for teacher education. The text attempts to combine many voices into one thorough, narrative approach, ultimately urging the reader to consider the possibilities of teacher research for advancing knowledge in the field and for enhancing the professional development of the participants.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of The Alchemist comes an internationally bestselling novel based on the author's own mystical journey to discover the seven secrets to creativity, abundance, healing, and love. Unsatisfied and unfulfilled by her understanding of life after the death of her father, Michal journeys to Jerusalem to see if the great mystic rabbis hold any answers. What she discovers, and what Patty Harpenau learned, were the seven secret codes to live by. The Life Codes embodies the mystical essence of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam that have been locked in secret texts and whispered in private ritual only to men of a certain age. Patty Harpenau broke down barriers when she was given these codes, and in this novel based on her own spiritual journey, she shows the process of discovery and how to apply these seven secrets to our lives in order to fulfill our purpose and our potential. Each of the seven codes is revealed as part of Michal's narrative. Each of the seven chapters ends in questions that help readers integrate the code into their lives and develop their own spiritual paths to peace, creativity, abundance, self-acceptance, love, and happiness. It is a heart-wrenching story of love; of relationships that transcend time, life, and death; and of a woman breaking through barriers to achieve her greatest aspiration.

Book excerpt: A must-read for new teachers and seasoned practitioners, this unique book presents Sonia Nieto and Alicia López, mother and daughter writing about the trajectories, vision, and values that brought them to teaching, including the ups and downs they have experienced and the reasons why they have stubbornly remained in one of the oldest, most difficult, and most rewarding of professions. Drawing on their extensive experience as educators in school and university classrooms, they reflect on what it means to teach young people, prospective teachers, and future academics in our complex, dynamic, and multicultural society. Teaching, A Life’s Work is at once theoretical and practical, reflective and critical, personal, professional, and political. Nieto and López document their reasons for becoming teachers and share some of the most important lessons they have learned along the way. Using journals, blogs, current writings, and their research, they explore how their views on curriculum, pedagogy, and the field of education itself have evolved over the years. “Riveting and beautiful! This book offers a full basket of wisdom wrapped up in personal stories of learning to teach.” —Christine Sleeter, California State University Monterey Bay “Nieto and López give us the gift of two lifetimes of loving commitment to teaching children and changing the world.” —Wayne Au, University of Washington Bothell “A genuine rarity! Download or read book Pencils Down! written by Paula Greene and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pencils Down! has been forty-five years in the making. It is hoped that by sharing classroom experiences, the reader will be entertained, enlightened, and educated. The ideas presented are written for all educators: veteran, novice, substitute and student teachers, parents who homeschool, college and university professors, as well as for anyone who has a child in his or her care. The guide offers the fruit of my experiences, gleaned from a lifetime in the classroom. Writing this book has been a labor of love, and it is my sincere hope that all educators reading this book will find some fresh insight into the wonderful profession of teaching. Pencils Down! will take you on a journey whose itinerary begins in elementary school and spans more than four decades. I have taken that journey at the head of the class. Many an author has written a book on education without ever having stepped into a real classroom. I have stepped into many classrooms, many times, over many years, and now feel qualified to write my first book.Having successfully survived as a teacher forty-five years in the public and private sectors of both the New York and Nevada school systems prompted me to write this book, a book packed with lessons that work, school humor, enrichment activities, and sage advice ready to be used by anyone who desires to instill a love of learning in a child. You may wish to do many of the lessons with your students. Most of the text deals with activities based on beloved children's books. I have selected more than fifty children's books I most enjoyed reading and teaching my students. Although some of these books never achieved Newbery Medal award status, each book teaches something of life's lessons, and each is a gem. My first priority was selecting excellent children's books. I have selected a broad and diverse collection of children's books with the hope that by using these books daily with all elementary school children, each child can learn to love books and appreciate the extended benefits of lifelong literacy. To give you a true flavor of what is covered, a summary of each part follows. Welcome to Pencils Down!Part One: School HumorYou are reading this either because you are contemplating a career in teaching or are curious to find out whether a veteran teacher can still be sane after spending forty-five years in the classroom. Part One presents the humorous side to an otherwise serious profession. You will get a glimpse of nineteenth and early twentieth century rules for teachers and peruse a copy of the contract teachers were made to sign. Both will make you wonder why anyone would consider a career in education. You will find out what teachers make and be privy to the public's low opinion of teachers' salaries. If you survive the reality show for educators, you may continue reading the book. School anecdotal incidents, accrued from many years in the classroom, will be shared. You will learn why God created the teacher and will be introduced to the new school policy. A test designed for preschoolers will challenge you. Answers from kindergartners and first graders as to why we read and write will be sure to surprise and amuse you. Actual student test answers and parental notes are included, both good for a chuckle. The difference between an educator and a teacher will be clarified. Today's schools, vs. schools in the 50's and 60's, will make you wish you were teaching in a simpler era and make you wonder if schools are still teaching math. An Australian school's answering machine will make you smile, as will the eleven things you did not and will not learn in school. Part Two: Getting to Know You"Getting to know you, Getting to know all about you.

People from many diverse traditions have been invited to sit face to face at the table of philosophy to engage in analytical and critical reflection in what Dr. John Morgan calls "the great questions of life." This book invites students to explore the meaning of life in an easy and understandable manner through the infamous character Professor Plotimus. The antics of Professor Plotimus make philosophy interesting, uncomplicated, and easy to grasp while deeply compelling . . . It allows our minds to wonder and listen to the wisdom of the ages that life has meaning and purpose if we only loosen the chains of dogma and venture out of our caves as we attempt to see life in a fresh way. --from the Preface by Linda Lewis Riccardi Adjunct Professor of Humanities and Philosophy, Reading Area Community College
