Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every city wants to become creative, perhaps even the most creative ever. But what does it mean to be a creative city? What images take shape as a consequence? What sort of city do we envisage? Which one are we actually building? In a journey that starts with Blade Runner and passes through English punk, Milanese creative workers and Star Wars, the book explores the features and outcomes of the creative city, penetrating its dark side but also identifying its assets. In the future, cities must be guided by a vision of a creative city able to be inclusive yet competitive, to open new public spaces and to be socially innovative. This book presents some of the tools that allow us to look at the city as a place whose air makes people free.

Book excerpt: “Although the benefits of this study to scholars are obvious, this thought-provoking mixture of scholarly and colloquial will enlighten inquisitive general readers, too.” — Library Journal (starred review) The classic study of the creative process from the bestselling author of Flow. Creativity is about capturing those moments that make life worth living. Legendary psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (“The leading researcher into ‘flow states.’” — Newsweek) reveals what leads to these moments—be it the excitement of the artist at the easel or the scientist in the lab—so that this knowledge can be used to enrich people's lives. Drawing on nearly one hundred interviews with exceptional people, from biologists and physicists, to politicians and business leaders, to poets and artists, as well as his thirty years of research on the subject, Csikszentmihalyi uses his famous flow theory to explore the creative process. He discusses such ideas as why creative individuals are often seen as selfish and arrogant, and why the "tortured genius" is largely a myth. Most important, he explains why creativity needs to be cultivated and is necessary for the future of our country, if not the world.

Summary Book Review Cities and Creativity from the Renaissance to the Present by Ilja Van Damme:

Download or read book Cities and Creativity from the Renaissance to the Present written by Ilja Van Damme and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume critically challenges the current creative city debate from a historical perspective. In the last two decades, urban studies has been engulfed by a creative city narrative in which concepts like the creative economy, the creative class or creative industries proclaim the status of the city as the primary site of human creativity and innovation. So far, however, nobody has challenged the core premise underlying this narrative, asking why we automatically have to look at cities as being the agents of change and innovation. What processes have been at work historically before the predominance of cities in nurturing creativity and innovation was established? In order to tackle this question, the editors of this volume have collected case studies ranging from Renaissance Firenze and sixteenth-century Antwerp to early modern Naples, Amsterdam, Bologna, Paris, to industrializing Sheffield and nineteenth-and twentieth century cities covering Scandinavian port towns, Venice, and London, up to the French techno-industrial city Grenoble. Jointly, these case studies show that a creative city is not an objective or ontological reality, but rather a complex and heterogenic "assemblage," in which material, infrastructural and spatial elements become historically entangled with power-laden discourses, narratives and imaginaries about the city and urban actor groups.

Summary Book Review Macro-history by Lee Daniel Snyder:

Download or read book Macro-history written by Lee Daniel Snyder and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creates a model of the cultural-historical process to explain historical change for all societies. Periodization charts provide historical data useful for empirical testing of the author's model. The book begins with a discussion of scientific truth in history to clarify the basic epistemological presuppositions and strategy. Snyder (history, New College) next discusses the micro level of his model, basing it on a structural analysis of the internal processes within the Culture-System during an historical cycle. Finally, the author identifies four environments of the cultural-social system in which he treats the individual human as an environment of the social system rather than a basic part.
