Download or read book Mehrsprachigkeit im Mittelalter written by Michael Baldzuhn and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication and the literary production of the Middle Ages were an integral part of a complex linguistic situation. Latin, the Western European language of education and administration, stood in contrast to the vernacular languages, which in turn were divided into different dialects. Different vernacular languages often existed in the same geographic area. This anthology approaches this topic, which has not been systematically covered until now, from an interdisciplinary perspective. It discusses fundamental methodological issues and surviving linguistic and literary documents from the 8th up to the 16th century.

Summary Book Review A Cultural History of the English Language by Gerry Knowles:

Download or read book A Cultural History of the English Language written by Gerry Knowles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new interpretation of the history of English. Access to large corpuses of English has allowed scholars to assess the minutiae of linguistic change with much greater precision than before, often pinpointing the beginnings of linguistic innovations in place and time. The author uses the findings from this research to relate major historical events to change in the language, in particular to areas of linguistic inquiry that have been of particular importance in recent years, such as discourse analysis, stylistics and work on pidgins and creoles. The book does not attempt to chronicle changes in syntax or pronunciation and spelling, but is designed to complement a corpus-based study of formal changes. The story of English is brought up to the late 1990s to include, amongst other things, discussions of Estuary English and the implications of the information superhighway.
