Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fate of the world depends on an unwitting teenage witch and her overweight cat. Sally Dahl thought she was casting rune spells for a healthier planet, but a grievous error in her magickal calculations has her calling up legendary Berserker warriors instead—sworn into her service, and with bottomless junk food cravings. Worse, her mistake rebounds and ages her at an alarming rate. So much for saving the Earth. When she stumbles across a living god in Portland who promises to help, she thinks she’s out of danger. But Sally doesn’t know she’s the legendary Rune Witch, with greater magick in her hands than she could possibly imagine. Nor does she have a clue that Thor, Freya, Odin, and other survivors of the Norse pantheon are nearby, struggling without their supernatural powers to eke out a living, and trying desperately to stop one of their own from bringing about the destruction of the World Tree, and by extension, the Cosmos. With her own life on the line, can Sally harness her power and find her way to a new generation of Vikings in time to prevent Ragnarok? Moon Dog Magic is the first book in the Rune Witch urban fantasy series. If you like modern-day magick, action-packed mayhem, and ancient legends come to life, you’ll love the Rune Witch books. Start reading today! (Moon Dog Magic was originally published as Valhalla [2011].)

Book excerpt: For over a hundred years, the Berserker warriors have fought and killed for kings. There is but one enemy we cannot defeat: the beast within. * The first 5 books of the Berserker Saga in one volume! Plus exclusive extras--including an excerpt from the soon-to-be released "Captured by the Berserkers" Inside: Sold to the Berserkers Mated to the Berserkers Taken by the Berserkers Given to the Berserkers Claimed by the Berserkers Plus an author interview, glossary, list of characters and excerpt from "Captured by the Berserkers" Sold to the Berserkers: I'll never forget the first time I saw them, warriors moving like shadows from the trees. Their eyes seemed to glow with a fierce golden light, moving more like beasts than men. I trembled, every hair on my flesh prickled in the age old response of the hunted. They were predators and I was prey. They entered the clearing and brought with them the smell of blood. Clad in furs and leather, bristling with weapons, they were warriors the likes of which I'd never seen. Huge, hulking forms, dark shapes pricked with those glowing pairs of eyes. I could not face them properly, for I was bound to a tree, in the middle of a wilderness, helpless as I waited to be sold to the Berserkers. Mated to the Berserkers A Highlander and Viking claim their woman... A witch told us of the one who can save us--a woman marked by the wolf. We found and claimed her. But will she accept us as mates? Can she soothe our feral nature before it is too late? Highland werewolf Daegan never expected to defeat the curse of his bloodline. But when a prophecy tells of a woman who holds the cure to his Berserker rage, he and his Viking warrior brother will stop at nothing to claim her. They bring her to their mountain home and train her according to pack rules. But will her power be enough to break the Berserker curse? Taken by the Berserkers My mother warned me not to go alone to the grove. But when the moon is full, heat stirs my blood...and it calls to them. The Berserkers came in the night and took me. I woke chained outside the monsters' cave. They were warriors, cursed by a witch to become ravening beasts. They tell me I'm their mate. The prophecy says I am the only one who can heal them. But can I tame the beast that haunts their mind...before it's too late? Given to the Berserkers Captured to be a prize in the brutal Berserker Games... My life changed forever when the Berserkers took me. These fearsome warriors must find women to keep their lethal rage at bay...and I am an ideal mate. The Alphas decree that all warriors must compete in a series of Highland Games for my hand. Of all the giant warriors, two have caught my eye, but I have no choice. When the final match is over, I will belong to the ruthless victors. They will possess me fully. I can only hope they will be the two I could come to love... Claimed by the Berserkers "You're ours now, lass. We're claiming ye." My mind and body are weakened by the curse of my magic. My three sisters have mated with Berserker warriors, but I am too frail to be a bride. One night, three warriors break into my home. They steal me away. They tell me I belong to them, and that they'll never let me go. To convince me, they spend hours giving me endless pleasure... But there's an preying on me. It wants me for its own, and none none can stand in its way. Except the Berserkers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly translated volume of the Collected Works of Marie-Louise von Franz, one of the most renowned authorities on fairytales, presents a systematic and wide-ranging approach. Von Franz amplifies a variety of fairytale motifs to show that the magical realm is alien to the profane and mundane realm of ordinary daily life. She was one of Analytical Psychology’s most original thinkers and here she presents a lucid, concise exploration of the archetypal symbols found in fairytales. Fairytales, like myths, provide a cultural and societal backdrop that helps the human imagination narrate the meaning of life’s events. The remarkable similarities in fairytale motifs across different lands and cultures inspired many scholars to search for the original homeland of fairytales. While peregrinations of fairytale motifs occur, the common root of fairytales is more archetypal than geographic. A striking feature of fairytales is that a sense of space, time, and causality is absent. This situates them in a magical realm, a land of the soul, where the most interesting things happen in the center of places like Heaven, mountains, lakes, and wells. At the age of eighteen, Marie-Louise von Franz was invited to meet Carl Gustav Jung at Bolingen Tower. She immediately recognized that there exist two levels of reality, one outer and the other inner. Within months she had enrolled at the University of Zürich and began attending Jung’s lectures at the E.T.H. (Eidgenösiche Technische Hochshule or the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology). Less than a decade after meeting Jung, von Franz had completed her doctorate in classical philology and begun seeing her first analysands. She was a prolific writer, a dedicated teacher and lecturer, and was possessed of a “far-reaching and often non discriminating Eros that accepted everyone seeking help.” (Alfred Ribi, MD in Fountain of the Love of Wisdom, Chiron, 2006)

In the Northern lands, the strongest are warriors who can summon the power of a bear during battle. To claim this dark legacy for himself, Autar Magnusson must slay a bear, alone, with only a sword and a spear. And to do that, he first must conquer his own fears ... the most deadly adversary of all. A reluctant hero with a tortured past, a willing mentor who knows more than he shows, and a host of fearsome adversaries come together in John P. Ribner's "Legacy of the Bear." Set during Scandinavia's Viking Age, it is the story of Autar Magnusson's entrance into manhood. Once labeled a coward by his father, he is nonetheless determined to risk his very life against a ferocious and legendary bear to prove himself worthy of becoming a berserker. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A follow-up publication to the Handbook of Medieval Studies, this new reference work turns to a different focus: medieval culture. Medieval research has grown tremendously in depth and breadth over the last decades. Particularly our understanding of medieval culture, of the basic living conditions, and the specific value system prevalent at that time has considerably expanded, to a point where we are in danger of no longer seeing the proverbial forest for the trees. The present, innovative handbook offers compact articles on essential topics, ideals, specific knowledge, and concepts defining the medieval world as comprehensively as possible. The topics covered in this new handbook pertain to issues such as love and marriage, belief in God, hell, and the devil, education, lordship and servitude, Christianity versus Judaism and Islam, health, medicine, the rural world, the rise of the urban class, travel, roads and bridges, entertainment, games, and sport activities, numbers, measuring, the education system, the papacy, saints, the senses, death, and money.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Review" was founded in 1979 to provide comprehensive coverage of all the major and minor books being released in the genre at that time. This was the golden era of SF publishing, with a thousand titles (old and new) hitting the stands and the bookshelves each and every year. From the older classics to the newest speculative fiction, this was the period when the best and the brightest shined forth their talents. SF&FBR included reviews by writers in the field, by amateur critics, and by litterateurs and University professors. Over a thousand books were covered during the single year of publication, many of them having been reviewed no where else, before or since. The January 1980 issue includes a comprehensive index of all the works featured during the preceding year. This reprint will be a welcome addition to the literature of science fiction and fantasy criticism. Neil Barron is a retired bibliographer and literary critic, editor of the acclaimed "Anatomy of Wonder" series. Robert Reginald was the publisher for twenty-five years of Borgo Press, and has authored over 110 books of his own."

Download or read book The Myths and Realities of the Viking Berserkr written by Roderick Dale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The viking berserkr is an iconic warrior normally associated with violent fits of temper and the notorious berserksgangr or berserker frenzy. This book challenges the orthodox view that these men went ‘berserk’ in the modern English sense of the word. It examines all the evidence for medieval perceptions of berserkir and builds a model of how the medieval audience would have viewed them. Then, it extrapolates a Viking Age model of berserkir from this model, and supports the analysis with anthropological and archaeological evidence, to create a new and more accurate paradigm of the Viking Age berserkr and his place in society. This shows that berserkir were the champions of lords and kings, members of the social elite, and that much of what is believed about them is based on 17th-century and later scholarship and mythologizing: the medieval audience would have had a very different understanding of the Old Norse berserkr from that which people have now. The book sets out a challenge to rethink and reframe our perceptions of the past in a way that is less influenced by our own modern ideas. The Myths and Realities of the Viking berserkr will appeal to researchers and students alike studying the Viking Age, Medieval History and Old Norse Literature.
