Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently there is a crisis occurring in healthcare involving clinician burnout, emotional exhaustion, lack of inspiration, and loss of personal meaning. For clinicians caring for cancer survivors, these feelings are aggravated by facing the largely unknown realm of survivorship and the issues it brings to patients and clinicians alike. As the number of cancer survivors grows, psychosocial oncology clinicians are increasingly called upon to work with the long-term aftermath of a cancer diagnosis, which requires the capacity to address the emotional and psychosocial issues that are not part of a traditional medical education. Clinicians have plenty of textbooks, but fewer hands-on, interactive guides that teach these kinds of experiential lessons that can be used in their day-to-day work lives. This accessible workbook offers a way to think about these important ideas while providing a structure to implement humanistic clinical practices. Clinical skills, communication tools, empathy as a learned capacity, cultural humility, reflective and mindful exercises designed to increase relationship skills-all of these depend upon this mode of experiential learning, as it teaches useful practices and solutions in order to increase the efficacy and satisfaction of clinical work with cancer survivors and their communities. Psychosocial Care of Cancer Survivors: A Clinician's Guide and Workbook for Providing Wholehearted Care is a clinical resource for healthcare practitioners that presents person-centered care as an antidote to the distress both patients and clinicians face in cancer survivorship. It addresses questions of how to bring a humanistic approach and quality attention to the growing needs of patients in the post-treatment phase of a cancer diagnosis. As a workbook, it's both a guide and an applicable resource for daily clinical practice. It provides a needed structure for clinicians to help them reconnect with the meaningful aspects of their work. Designed for busy psychosocial oncology clinicians who may feel disconnected but don't fully understand why, this workbook addresses the need for a humanistic and pragmatic approach to the psychosocial issues that arise in their work with patients. Based on personal interviews with clinicians, written feedback from clinicians, and research describing the formidable demands facing professionals working in cancer healthcare, as well as the dangers of burnout, this is highly practical, interactive guide addresses the emotional and psychological concerns of both patient and clinician. This workbook will be a much-needed resource for humanizing cancer survivorship care. The book is presented in two parts: - Part I focuses on skillful means for providing humanistic patient care. - Part II offers clinicians pragmatic structures and methods they can start using with patients right away, and provides a humanistic clinical framework that benefits them both personally and professionally. Clinicians will gain: - Clinical skills vital to forming healing clinical relationships: - Communication tools to enhance effective collaboration, such as personal and professional boundaries, the essentials of a healing relationship, stages of the clinical interview, collegial collaboration. - Exercises designed for personal reflection and the implementation of the abovementioned clinical skills and communication tools. - Useful practices and solutions to increase the efficacy and satisfaction of their work. Written from the perspective of a clinician-survivor, Psychosocial Care of Cancer Survivors is about the healing power of relationship for both patient and practitioner as they negotiate the complex world of cancer survivorship.

This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in today’s world where the #Me Too movement is raising awareness of the magnitude of sexual abuse, children remain the silent majority of victims of sexual predators and pedophiles. Although there has been an increase in public discussions through the media and high-profile cases, the sexual abuse of children still remains a difficult topic for victims and their families. Dr. Deborah Inman incorporates knowledge and expertise from personal and professional experience with current research and statistics to raise awareness about the continuing prevalence of child sexual abuse and the lifelong impact on victims/survivors. In a thoughtful presentation designed to help parents and mental health professionals navigate through the challenges of this type of abuse, Dr. Inman: • Documents the pervasiveness of childhood sexual abuse in the United States; • provides resources for parents to protect and support their children; • shares insight to help a support system guide children after they reveal their secret; • explains how a survivor’s parents are impacted by abuse; • offers guidance on how to help the child begin healing; • provides detailed examinations of real-life cases; and • challenges the legal system to hold abusers responsible for their actions. In this comprehensive guidebook, Dr. Inman shares wisdom and tips that will help childhood sexual abuse victims and their support systems navigate through the trauma and ultimately toward healing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Fiona Carnarvon became the chatelaine of Highclere Castle - the setting of the hit series Downton Abbey - eight years ago. In that time she's become fascinated by the rich history of Highclere, and by the extraordinary people who lived there over the centuries. One person particularly captured Fiona's imagination - Lady Almina, the 5th Countess of Carnarvon. Almina was the illegitimate daughter of banking tycoon Alfred de Rothschild. She was his only daughter and he doted on her. She married the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, at 19, with an enormous dowry. At first, life at Highclere was a dizzying mix of sumptuous banquets for 500 and even the occasional royal visitor. Almina oversaw 80 members of staff - many of whom came from families who had worked at Highclere for generations. But when the First World War broke out, life at Highclere changed forever. History intervened and Almina and the staff of Highclere were thrown into one of the most turbulent times of the last century. Almina was forced to draw on her deepest reserves of courage in order to ensure her family, the staff and the castle survived. This is the remarkable story of a lost time. But Highclere remains and in this book, Fiona weaves Almina's journey and those of her family into the heritage and history of one of England's most exquisite Victorian castles.

Download or read book Perspectives on the Holocaust written by R.L. Braham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of books and articles dealing with various aspects of World War II has increased at a phenomenal rate since the end of the hostilities. Perhaps no other chapter in this bloodiest of all wars has received as much attention as the Holo caust. The Nazis' program for the "Final Solution of the Jewish Question" - this ideologically conceived, diabolical plan for the physicalliquidation of European Jewry - has emerged as a subject of agonizing and intense interest to laypersons and scholars alike. The centrality of the Holocaust in the study of the Third Reich and the Nazi phenomenon is almost universally recognized. The source materials for many of the books published during the immediate postwar period were the notes and diaries kept by many camp and ghetto dwellers, who were sustained during their unbelievable ordeal by the unusual drive to bear witness. These were supplemented after the liberation by a large number of personal narratives collected from survivors alI over Europe. Understandably, the books published shortly after the war ended were mainly martyrological and lachrymological, reflecting the trauma of the Holocaust at the personal, individual level. These were soon followed by a considerable number of books dealing with the moral and religious questions revolving around the role ofthe lay and spiritual leaders of the doomed Jewish communities, especially those involved in the Jewish Councils, as well as God' s responsibility toward the "chosen people.
