Book excerpt: The ability to give an effective verbal presentation is an important skill that you can teach your students. To be able to give strong, organized oral presentations increases a person's chances of being regarded as knowledgeable, capable, and in command. This complete, developmental program prepares young people to become confident public speakers. It introduces techniques for writing and delivering interesting, animated speeches. General topics include making introductions, quick-pick speeches, writing a speech, and speaking techniques. Fashioned after Toastmasters, the program includes complete lesson plans, worksheets and information sheets, and evaluation forms. The culminating activity is a program that allows each participant to make an oral presentation. In each lesson, practical ideas introduce and reinforce the need for preparation and attention to detail. The series of lessons begins with fun, low-anxiety activities and ends with a presentation for parents. Once students become skillful and confident in public speaking, you will find many opportunities for them to use these skills. There are opportunities for oral presentations in all areas of the curriculum. Some activities that would reinforce public speaking skills are oral book reports, reader's theater, discussion groups, oral reports in content areas, poster talks, interviews, demonstrations or explanations of how to do something, brainstorming, debates, plays, teaching a lesson, dramatic or expressive reading, or role-playing. For more guidance on verbal presentation, see Public Speaking: A Student Guide to Writing and Delivering a Great Speech. Grades 4-8

Download or read book Public Speaking for Criminal Justice Professionals written by Thomas P Mauriello and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public Speaking for Criminal Justice Professionals: A Manner of Speaking is a one-of-a-kind public speaking guide specifically written for criminal justice professionals, written by a criminal justice professional. Author Thomas Mauriello has worked his entire professional career both as a practitioner and as an educator in the fields of criminal justice and forensic science. This book outlines the public speaking skills he has learned, used, and taught to thousands of criminal justice, forensic science, security, and counterintelligence professionals over the years. The book can either be read from cover-to-cover—to fine tune the reader’s existing oral communication skills—or read in a modular fashion, as a reference guide to focus on certain skills and techniques. A list of over 55 proven, effective presentation tools will be listed, discussed, and demonstrated throughout the book—using illustrated criminal justice and forensic sciences topic examples. Contrary to popular believe, simply knowing your subject or being an expert in the subject does not guarantee a successful presentation. Aristotle, who many recognize as the Father of Public Speaking and Forensic Debate, said it best when he declared, "It is not enough to know what to say, one must know how to say it." This guide focuses on technique and the recognition that a speaker must have of both the subject and the listener. The purpose is to improve readers' skill level and ability to engage and, thereby, inform the listener. Whether preparing to speak to one person, or one thousand people, Public Speaking for Criminal Justice Professionals provides specific techniques for professionals to speaking with confidence, and present effective engaging presentations.

Summary Book Review Speaker Jim Wright by J. Brooks Flippen:
Download or read book Speaker Jim Wright written by J. Brooks Flippen and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Wright made his mark on virtually every major public policy issue in the later twentieth century—energy, education, taxes, transportation, environmental protection, civil rights, criminal justice, and foreign relations, among them. He played a significant role in peace initiatives in Central America and in the Camp David Accords, and he was the first American politician to speak live on Soviet television. A Democrat representing Texas’s twelfth district (Fort Worth), Wright served in the US House of Representatives from the Eisenhower administration to the presidency of George H. W. Bush, including twelve years (1977–1989) as majority leader and speaker. His long congressional ascension and sudden fall in a highly partisan ethics scandal spearheaded by Newt Gingrich mirrored the evolution of Congress as an institution. Speaker Jim Wright traces the congressman’s long life and career in a highly readable narrative grounded in extensive interviews with Wright and access to his personal diaries. A skilled connector who bridged the conservative and liberal wings of the Democratic party while forging alliances with Republicans to pass legislation, Wright ultimately fell victim to a new era of political infighting, as well as to his own hubris and mistakes. J. Brooks Flippen shows how Wright’s career shaped the political culture of Congress, from its internal rules and power structure to its growing partisanship, even as those new dynamics eventually contributed to his political demise. To understand Jim Wright in all his complexity is to understand the story of modern American politics.

Download or read book Citizen Newhouse written by Carol Felsenthal and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An acclaimed biographer takes on one of the world's most elusive media moguls in Citizen Newhouse. The harvest of four years and over 400 interviews, Carol Felsenthal's book is an unauthorized investigative biography that paints a tough yet even-handed portrait. Here is the father, Sam Newhouse, who developed a formula for creating newspaper monopolies in small metropolitan markets and turned it into a huge family fortune. And the sons: Si in the magazine business, with his crown jewels, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and Vogue, and Donald, who runs the family's newspaper and cable television companies. Focusing on Si's life and career, Citizen Newhouse takes the measure of one of America's most powerful yet unexamined figures. Felsenthal shows how Si's quirky behavior as a shy and awkward outsider has had a far-reaching impact on the properties he owns, affecting—and in the opinion of some, compromising—the quality of the Newhouse "product" across the country and the world. Felsenthal shines a light on the breathtaking changes that have taken place among Si’s top editors, and the fabulous perks available to members of this elite. She also lays bare the role played by Roy Cohn in the affairs of both father and son. Citizen Newhouse provides a fascinating account of powerful and glamorous lives—and their impact on the newspapers and magazines we read every day.
