Book excerpt: "The hero of this unfocused but quirkily humorous depiction of the vagaries of middle age is Charles Shapes, whose lot in life seems to be to put up with whatever comes his way. To the hapless Shapes, even the pronunciation of his name--it's SHA-pess--is an albatross. Saddled with a middling stereo-equipment business (whose only employee is a thief), a weak-willed son-in-law and an unhappy daughter, with a perpetually paranoid Soviet emigre under his sponsorship and a chronic and extremely painful ear problem, Shapes has plenty of reason to complain, but instead views the circumstances of his life with bemused tolerance. The sudden death of his estranged wife rocks his world somewhat"--Publishers Weekly.

Summary Book Review La Maison de Verre by Dominique Vellay:
Download or read book La Maison de Verre written by Dominique Vellay and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maison de Verre (literally "House of Glass") is a rarely seen modernist masterpiece in the center of Paris. Here, for the first time, is the inside story of its birth and character. In 1927 Annie and Jean Dalsace acquired an eighteenth-century town house and commissioned their friend, the architect and designer Pierre Chareau, to turn it into a modern dwelling. What he did was without precedent. Underpinning the top story, he removed everything beneath it, replaced the walls with translucent glass bricks, installed remotely controlled swiveling windows and divided the interior by perforated metal screens that rotate or slide silently. He built galleried balconies and open-topped staircases that permit the eye to rove freely through the space and to appreciate works of art collected by the modern-spirited Annie Dalsace, and the unique collection of furniture designed by the architect, some covered with tapestry by the artist Jean Lurcat. The text is by Dominique Vellay, granddaughter of the original clients, who has known the house ever since her childhood, and makes us experience it at first hand. The photographs are by the internationally renowned Francois Halard.
Summary Book Review Minds in Play by Yasmin Bettina Kafai:
Download or read book Minds in Play written by Yasmin Bettina Kafai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1995 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video games more than any other media have brought technology into children's homes and hearts. Educators, psychologists, and parents are struck by the quality of engagement that stands in stark contrast to children's usual interest in school homework and other activities. Whereas most research efforts have concentrated on discussing the effects of game playing, this book takes a different stance. It takes a close look at games as a context for learning by placing children in the roles of producers rather than consumers of games. Kafai presents a constructionist vision of computer-based learning activities in schools. She follows a class of sixteen fourth-grade students from an inner-city public elementary school as they were programming games in Logo to teach fractions to third graders. The children transformed their classroom into a game design studio for six months, learning programming, writing stories and dialogues, constructing representations of fractions, creating package designs and advertisements, considering interface design issues, and devising teaching strategies. In this context, programming became a medium for children's personal and creative expression; in the design of their games children engaged their fantasies and built relationships with other pockets of reality that went beyond traditional school approaches. The ideas and discussions presented in this book address educators, researchers, and software and curriculum designers interested in children's learning and thinking with educational technologies.
