Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed chronological analysis of British World War II movies from 1939 until the present explores how films projected recognizable stereotypes of British national character and how the times in which a film was made shaped its perspectives. Several chapters look at films made during and immediately after the war. In depictions of the Home Front, characters display resolve as well as emotional restraint and present an image of an undivided society cooperating to fight evil. By contrast, duty and service are the paramount virtues of combat films while spy melodramas exemplify the British love of improvisation. Fifties war films are examined against the backdrop of alarm and uncertainty caused by the Cold War. Such films reflect traditional national character stereotypes, though the stiff upper lip begins to be questioned by the end of the decade. The book then traces the radical effect of the 1960s revolution, revealing how the fondness for skeptical antiwar movies went hand in hand with the questioning of Britain’s place in the world. The book ends by looking at recent war films and asks whether these reflect the cult of narcissism so prevalent in modern Britain.

Summary Book Review Bomber Boys on Screen by S. P. MacKenzie:

Download or read book Bomber Boys on Screen written by S. P. MacKenzie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Second World War, depictions of Royal Air Force operations in film and television drama have become so numerous that they make up a genre worthy of scholarly attention. In this illuminating study, S. P. MacKenzie explores the different ways in which the men of RAF Bomber Command have been represented in dramatic form on the big and small screen from the war years to the present day. Bomber Boys on Screen is the first in-depth study of how and why the screen-drama image of those who flew, those who directed them, and those who provided support for RAF bomber operations has changed over time, sometimes in contested circumstances. Until now dramas that focus on Bomber Command have tended to be mentioned only in passing or studied in isolation, despite the prevalence of surveys of both the British war film genre and of aviation cinema. In Bomber Boys on Screen MacKenzie examines the development, presentation, and reception of significant dramas on a decade-by-decade basis. Titles from the beginning of the war (The Lion Has Wings, 1939) to the start of new century (Bomber's Moon, 2014) are situated in the context of technical possibilities and limitations, evolving social and cultural norms in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, and the development of moral and utilitarian controversies surrounding the wartime bomber offensive directed against Nazi Germany. While the focus is on feature films and television plays, reference is also made to documentaries, memorials, veterans' organizations, book titles, war comics, and other representations of the war fought by Bomber Command.

Download or read book The Battle of Britain on Screen written by S. P. MacKenzie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new, updated edition of The Battle of Britain on Screen examines in depth the origins, development and reception of the major dramatic screen representations of 'The Few' in the Battle of Britain produced over the past 75 years. Paul MacKenzie explores both continuity and change in the presentation of a wartime event that acquired and retains near-mythical dimensions in popular consciousness and has been represented many times in feature films and television dramas. Alongside relevant technical developments, the book also examines the social, cultural, and political changes occurring in the second half of the 20th century and first decade of current century that helped shape how the battle came to be framed dramatically. This edition contains a new chapter looking at the portrayal of the Battle of Britain at the time of its 70th anniversary. Through its perceptive demonstration of how our memory of the battle has been constantly reshaped through film and television, The Battle of Britain on Screen provides students of the Second World War, 20th-century Britain and film history with a thorough and complex understanding of an iconic historical event.

Download or read book The British at War written by James Chapman and published by I.B.Tauris. This book was released on 1998-12-31 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British film propaganda efforts during the Second World War have tended to be presented as a shambles. James Chapman argues that this is not so in this first comprehensive history of wartime film propaganda policy in Britain. He examines the role of the cinema as a vehicle of propaganda, set within its institutional, political and cultural contexts, revealing the complex relationships between the Ministry of Information and the different sectors of the film industry. The author identifies the themes and ideologies presented to audiences through analysis of key wartime films, including Forty-Ninth Parallel, In Which We Serve and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. He also corrects a previous misunderstanding of the role in official propaganda of short films and documentaries, demonstrating how these films were as successful as commercial feature films at carrying propaganda to the nation's cinema-goers.

Book excerpt: Military force projection is the self-reliant capacity to strike from mainland ports, bases and airfields to protect Australia's sovereignty as well as more distant national interests. Force projection is not just a flex of military muscle in times of emergency or the act of dispatching forces. It is a cycle of force preparation, command, deployment, protection, employment, sustainment, rotation, redeployment and reconstitution. If the Australian Defence Force consistently gets this cycle wrong, then there is something wrong with Australia's defence. This monograph is a force projection audit of four Australian regional force projections in the late 1980s and the 1990s--valid measures of competence. It concludes that Australia is running out of luck and time. The Rudd Government has commissioned a new Defence White paper. This monograph is Exhibit A for change.

Download or read book Models and Projections of Demand in Post-War Britain written by Angus Deaton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first number of our earlier series, A Programme for Growth, carried a notice of forthcoming papers. Five were announced but eventually only four were published. The fifth, which was intended to deal with consumption functions, never appeared; now it takes its place as number one in the new series. It is not that ten years ago we had nothing to say on the subject of consumers' behaviour. The crude estimation method that I had used in my original (1954) paper on the linear expenditure system gave interesting and in many respects satisfactory results, some of which were published outside our series, for instance in Stone, Brown and ). With this method the parameter estimates changed Rowe ( 1964 very little after the first few iterations. Nevertheless they did change, and with the computing resources then at our disposal we failed to reach convergence. It was mainly for this reason that we decided to wait.
