Download or read book Political Thinking, Political Theory, and Civil Society written by Steven M. DeLue and published by Longman Publishing Group. This book was released on 2002 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DeLue, Steven M., Political Thinking, Political Theory, and Civil Society, 2nd Edition*\ A comprehensive and thoughtful overview of the Western tradition of political thought, this book approaches the subject in a way that helps readers develop their own political thinking and critical thinking skills. Readers are asked to consider: What is the nature of a civil society and why is it important? The major writers discussed in the book are read not only with an interest in understanding their views, but also an interest in understanding their relationship to the idea of a civil society. DeLue contends that a civil society is important for securing the way of life that most of us value and want to preserve, a way of life that allows people to place significance on their own lives. For those interested in politics and theories.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Summary Book Review Realism in Political Theory by Rahul Sagar:

Download or read book Realism in Political Theory written by Rahul Sagar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, an intellectual movement known as "realism" has challenged the reigning orthodoxy in political theory and political philosophy. Realists take issue with what they see as the excessive moralism and utopianism associated with prominent philosophers like John Rawls, Ronald Dworkin, and G.A. Cohen; but what they would put in its place has not always been clear. The contributors to this volume seek to bring realism into a new phase, constructive rather than merely combative. To this end they examine three distinct kinds of realism. The first seeks to place questions of feasibility at the center of political theory and philosophy; the second seeks to reorient our interpretations of key works in the canon; the third seeks new interpretations or specifications of prominent ideologies such as liberalism, radicalism, and republicanism such that they no longer rely on abstract or systematic philosophic systems. Contributors include: David Estlund, Edward Hall, Alison McQueen, Terry Nardin, Philip Pettit, Janosch Prinz, Enzo Rossi, Andrew Sabl, Rahul Sagar, and Matt Sleat. The chapters originally published as a special issue of Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy.

Download or read book Gandhi in Political Theory written by Dr Anuradha Veeravalli and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can Gandhi be considered a systematic thinker? While the significance of Gandhi’s thought and life to our times is undeniable it is widely assumed that he did not serve any discipline and cannot be considered a systematic thinker. Despite an overwhelming body of scholarship and literature on his life and thought the presuppositions of Gandhi’s experiments, the systematic nature of his intervention in modern political theory and his method have not previously received sustained attention. Addressing this lacuna, the book contends that Gandhi’s critique of modern civilization, the presuppositions of post-Enlightenment political theory and their epistemological and metaphysical foundations is both comprehensive and systematic. Gandhi’s experiments with truth in the political arena during the Indian Independence movement are studied from the point of view of his conscious engagement with method and theory rather than merely as a personal creed, spiritual position or moral commitment. The author shows how Gandhi’s experiments are illustrative of his theoretical position, and how they form the basis of his opposition to the foundations of modern western political theory and the presuppositions of the modern nation state besides envisioning the foundations of an alternative modernity for India, and by its example, for the world.

Summary Book Review Parties, Partisanship and Political Theory by Matteo Bonotti:

Download or read book Parties, Partisanship and Political Theory written by Matteo Bonotti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political parties have only recently become a subject of investigation in normative political theory. Parties have traditionally been studied by political scientists in their organizational features and in relation to the analysis of related topics such as party systems and electoral systems. Little attention, however, was paid until recently to the normative assumptions that underlie partisanship and party politics. Are parties desirable for democratic politics? How should liberal democracies deal with extremist and/or anti-democratic parties? Do religious parties undermine the secular distinction between religion and politics and is that bad for liberal democracies? These are only some of the many questions that political theorists had left unanswered for a long time. The papers in this collection aim to provide a twofold contribution to the normative analysis of partisanship. On the one hand, they aim to offer a first much needed ‘state of the art’ of the existing research in this area. Many of the contributors have already done extensive research on partisanship and their pieces partly reflect their research expertise and individual approaches to this topic. On the other hand, all pieces move beyond the authors’ existing work and represent significant additions to the normative literature on partisanship, thus setting the standards for future research in this area. This book was published as a special issue of Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy.
