Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents an important voice in the scientific discourse on what constitutes a sustainable information society, and provides a new comprehensive and forward-looking approach to such a development. This approach is based on the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) by the main stakeholders of society, including individuals, enterprises, and public administration, who should use ICTs in order to build the welfare of present and future generations, ensure economic growth and socio-cultural development, increase participation in public life, permit personal development, and build the wisdom of society. As such, the book mainly focuses on the role ICTs play in transforming business, public administration and everyday life in the context of the sustainable information society. This volume will appeal to both researchers and practitioners, as it provides significant areas and directions for research on the sustainable information society, and suggests important issues for programming, building and adopting such a society. The book will allow the reader to answer such critical contemporary questions as ‘What is the sustainable information society and what role is played by ICTs in this society?’; ‘What are the challenges and tasks of people, enterprises, and public administration that lead towards the sustainable information society?’; ‘How can ICTs support people, enterprises, and public administration in programming, building and adopting such a society?’; ‘What are the factors affecting ICT adoption by people, enterprises, and public administration in this context?’; ‘What are the areas that should require a primary focus in order to achieve the most satisfying results of ICT adoption by people, enterprises, and public administration?’; and ‘How can ICT adoption by people, enterprises, and public administration be measured here?’

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information and knowledge play an increasingly important role in the implementation of public policies, in particular those of the Central and Eastern European Countries. They are involved in many respects in the elaboration of scientific programs. They are more and more present in the political decision making process and as topic for scientific conferences. They are often at the centre of international discussions on related topics, for example, differences in approaches to produce and apply knowledge or different responses to social function of information. A major lesson of these past years applies to democracy. Europeans demand more involvement in decisions that concern them. This demand goes weH beyond decision making. For public action to be acceptable and efficient, the whole process should become more democratic, from the defmition of the problems, to the implementation and the evaluation of solutions. In the context of conducting research on the consequences of scientific and technological advance, the Europäische Akademie Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in Germany and the Academy of Science of the Czech Republic organised a conference on the relationship between "democracy-participation-technology assessment" in February 1999. The objective of the workshop was to express and to the problems of transition "from exchange various viewpoints and attitudes information society to knowledge society. " The great response given to the international conference underlines the need not only for Central and Eastern European Countries to take into consideration more common projects like this for the future.

This book was released on 2009-10-02 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material contained in this publication is the outcome of the 8th International Conference on Human Rights "Right to Knowledge and Information in Heterogenic Society", organized by the Faculty of Law and Administration in the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland), in cooperation with the Faculty of Law in the University of Bari (Italy), which took place on 30-31 May 2008 in Olsztyn. The selection of issues in no respect can be called accidental. The summit of the European Council in Lisbon in March 2000 created foundations for creating society based on knowledge that is conscious in gaining information and equal access to knowledge. Individual actions of countries should aim at creating a human-friendly "information society" which allows creation of new working places and developing information and telecommunication technologies. This broad spectrum of problems which were the subject of the conference, interests not only Polish researchers but also scientists from countries like Italy, Spain, Ukraine, the United States of America, United Kingdom, and South Korea. They represent various cultures, which implies differences of opinion on many issues related to human rights. Publications included in this collective work are the reflection of freedom to express thoughts on difficult topics, which are important for all though.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the challenges and needs of society that schools face? This publication focuses on the transformation of the school towards a learning organization in the society. The authors present the model of school transformation, supporting it with the theory of transformational leadership and a description of contemporary school functions in the individual and social dimensions. The main reflection is grounded in the assumption that an institution where the interactions between the present and the image of the future are particularly visible is school-essentially focused on the anticipation of emerging civilization trends and new opportunities. Modern schools are particularly expected to promote functions related to the preparation for active life, involved in creating the world in changing conditions and functions related to the universalization of life patterns while maintaining the identity and subjectivity of groups and individuals.

Download or read book The Future of Work in Information Society written by Andrzej Piotr Wierzbicki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the question as to whether technological developments will ultimately mean the end of work and, if so, what the consequences will be. The author addresses this question from the perspective of a technologist well versed in econometrics and game theory, and argues that it is not technology alone that could lead to the end of work, but its utilization by the capitalist system. Technology allows us to minimize the costs of work and increase profits, while the system is worsening unemployment, socio-economic inequality and stratification – which could lead to the end of capitalism in a massive global revolution. As such, the book proposes an evolutionary reform based on a seemingly minor but in fact essential correction of the corporate income tax, which he proposes should decrease in accordance with the percentage of the enterprise’s revenues expended to pay employee salaries. In this way, entrepreneurs will be motivated to implement new professions and occupations, as well as new workplaces. Only in this way, the book argues, can reforms be used to prevent the end of work, which would have catastrophic consequences.

Book excerpt: Europe enlarged its boundaries in 2004 with the accession of ten new member states to the European Union. The creation of an effective information society is seen as critical to the global competitiveness of Europe. Based upon detailed data collection and rigorous analysis, the book presents a benchmarking study of the 10 new member states and 3 candidate countries of the European Union as compared to the 15 incumbent countries with respect to the development of their information societies. Using a framework based on the Europe 2005 benchmarking framework, the 28 EU members and candidate countries are ranked according to their level of information society development, and then classified into 4 categories. The results presented in this book are of importance to all managers and companies doing business in the IT sector in the European Union.
