Book excerpt: One of 2021's Most Highly Anticipated New Books—Newsweek One of The 20 Leadership Books to Read in 2020—Adam Grant One of The Best New Wellness Books Hitting Shelves in January 2021—Shape.com A Top Business Book for January 2021—Financial Times A Next Big Idea Club Nominee Social Chemistry will utterly transform the way you think about “networking.” Understanding the contours of your social network can dramatically enhance personal relationships, work life, and even your global impact. Are you an Expansionist, a Broker, or a Convener? The answer matters more than you think. . . . Yale professor Marissa King shows how anyone can build more meaningful and productive relationships based on insights from neuroscience, psychology, and network analytics. Conventional wisdom says it's the size of your network that matters, but social science research has proven there is more to it. King explains that the quality and structure of our relationships has the greatest impact on our personal and professional lives. As she shows, there are three basic types of networks, so readers can see the role they are already playing: Expansionist, Broker, or Convener. This network decoder enables readers to own their network style and modify it for better alignment with their life plans and values. High-quality connections in your social network strongly predict cognitive functioning, emotional resilience, and satisfaction at work. A well-structured network is likely to boost the quality of your ideas, as well as your pay. Beyond the office, social connections are the lifeblood of our health and happiness. The compiled results from dozens of previous studies found that our social relationships have an effect on our likelihood of dying prematurely—equivalent to obesity or smoking. Rich stories of Expansionists like Vernon Jordan, Brokers like Yo-Yo Ma, and Conveners like Anna Wintour, as well as personal experiences from King's own world of connections, inform this warm, engaging, revelatory investigation into some of the most consequential decisions we can make about the trajectory of our lives.

This book was released on 2021-10-02 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2021 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 1,3, Mendel University, language: English, abstract: Future German pensioners will face a pension gap in retirement age if they base their income exclusively on the statutory pension. Conventional private pension alternatives are not lucrative, but they are still the most widely used. Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have features that make them particularly attractive for pension provision. The aim of this dissertation is to discover which factors influence the acceptance formation process and thus the usage of ETFs. Therefore, a model is developed that is based conceptually on the widely known technology acceptance model (TAM) and theoretically on the results of a comprehensive literature analysis, which summarises already identified obstacles within old-age provision. This model is then tested using an online survey on future German pensioners aged between 19 and 59 years (n=615). The descriptive statistics are then calculated for the recorded data, and subsequently, the relationships within the variable model are analysed for significant dependencies. The results show that the assumed external variables have an influence on the acceptance of ETFs. In particular, the variable of financial literacy as an indicator of a person’s general financial knowledge turns out to be of overriding importance within the acceptance formation process. Furthermore, the results show that the use of an ETF is well recognised, but that it is still too complex to obtain information or acquire an ETF, which ultimately hampers acceptance formation, and thus the use. Finally, two concepts are developed that would have a positive influence on acceptance in different ways; they focus on different variables and behavioural patterns that still act as obstacles, thereby increasing the overall use of ETFs in Germany.

This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Corporate communication, grade: 80%, University of Salford (The Digital Marketing Institute Ireland), language: English, abstract: This document looks at the evolution of one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to-many communications and reveals the main differences between these communication approaches. A separate section will take a closer look at social media which have influenced how audiences want to be marketed to today. The world can be divided into physical and virtual parts. Prensky distinguishes between digital natives and digital immigrants. Because digital technologies evolve very fast, companies must adapt quickly in order to interact with customers in a sustainable way. Lastly, this paper displays the techniques that are required of today’s marketers. Before the Industrial Revolution enabled mass production, local store owners relied on one-to-one communication. While storekeepers knew their customers and their individual purchase histories, it was not possible to expand to a high level of personalisation. With the arrival of print and later broadcast advertising, marketing evolved to one-to-many communications. In 1994, the World Wide Web enabled an even broader reach than television, radio and newspapers. Hackley and Kitchen wrote in 1998 that "consumers are social". Early websites erased the boundaries of space and time, although they did not yet enable two-way communication. Marketers were still targeting their customers with mass media messages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access and available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. It is funded by Knowledge Unlatched. This innovative volume focuses on the significance of early Christianity for modern means of addressing poverty, by offering a rigorous study of deprivation and its alleviation in both earliest Christianity and today's world. The contributors seek to present the complex ways in which early Christian ideas and practices relate to modern ideas and practices, and vice versa. In this light, the book covers seven major areas of poverty and its causes, benefaction, patronage, donation, wealth and dehumanization, 'the undeserving poor', and responsibility. Each area features an expert in early Christianity in its Jewish and Graeco-Roman settings, paired with an expert in modern strategies for addressing poverty and benefaction; each author engages with the same topic from their respective area of expertise, and responds to their partner's essay. Giving careful attention toboth the continuities and discontinuities between the ancient world and today, the contributors seek to inform and engage church leaders, those working in NGOs concerned with poverty, and all interested in these crucial issues, both Christian and not.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machine learning, big data and AI are reshaping the human experience and forcing us to develop a new ethical intelligence. Peter Hershock offers a new way to think about attention, personal presence, and ethics as intelligent technology shatters previously foundational certainties and opens entirely new spaces of opportunity. Rather than turning exclusively to cognitive science and contemporary ethical theories, Hershock shows how classical Confucian and Socratic philosophies help to make visible what a history of choices about remaking ourselves through control biased technology has rendered invisible. But it is in Buddhist thought and practice that Hershock finds the tools for valuing and training our attention, resisting the colonization of consciousness, and engendering a more equitable and diversity-enhancing human-technology-world relationship. Focusing on who we need to be present as to avoid a future in which machines prevent us from either making or learning from our own mistakes, Hershock offers a constructive response to the unprecedented perils of intelligent technology and seamlessly blends ancient and contemporary philosophies to envision how to realize its equally unprecedented promises.

It follows different approaches in the discipline, going subfield by subfield from Political Theory to American Politics, Comparative, and IR. It has a strong introductory chapter that helps disentangle the relation between politics and political science." —Manuel Balan, McGill University Political science has changed; the way students learn has changed; so too should the way it’s taught.
