Book excerpt: THE INSPIRING, REVEALING STORY OF ONE WOMAN’S YEARS BEHIND CONVENT WALLS AND HER RETURN TO THE WORLD OUTSIDE In 1925 Mary McCarran joined her sister Margaret in the Convent of the Holy Names. Here is the story of the black-garbed postulant, hopeful and homesick. Here is the nun, tried and proven, exchanging vows for a gold wedding ring. Sister Mary Mercy made her greatest sacrifice in a small convent room where, after thirty-two years, she exchanged her beloved habit for a new pink dress—and returned to the secular world. This is Mary McCarran’s unforgettable and inspiring story of those three decades as a member of a religious community. “An apparently faithful view of some inner workings of the Catholic Church seldom revealed dispassionately to the public at large...an altogether extraordinary story told in an extraordinary manner.”—NEW YORK JOURNAL AMERICAN

This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not quite four months after the Western Region's election of October 10, 1965, did the localized mayhem in that Region find its way furiously into the center of the nation on January 15, 1966! It was like a whirl-wind of nothing but anarchy and lawlessness. The serious aftermath of the marred and rigged election was that it acted as the last straw that broke the Carmel's back, providing immediate reason for the army to overthrow the government of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. Anarchy ensued; a counter coup led to the death of Major-General Ironsi. Callous barbarous massacre of thousands of easterners in the North followed. With their lives in jeopardy, easterners fled for safety to eastern region; refugee crisis followed. To guarantee their safety, easterners seceded from Nigeria and on May 30th 1967, formed an independent and sovereign nation of the Republic of Biafra. Determined to bring Easterners back, on July 6, 1967 Nigeria invaded Biafra; waged a gruesome thirty-month-civil war against Biafra. Nigeria blockaded Biafra on land, sea and air, to prevent food from entering Biafra. A malnutrition disease, Kwashiorkor that caused the deaths of thousands of Biafrans, followed. Nigeria bombed Biafran civilians, killing thousands. On January 12, 1970 the war ended leaving more than three million people dead in a war that was totally avoidable!

Download or read book Once, Only Once, and in the Right Place written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-12-16 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The usefulness of the U.S. decennial census depends critically on the accuracy with which individual people are counted in specific housing units, at precise geographic locations. The 2000 and other recent censuses have relied on a set of residence rules to craft instructions on the census questionnaire in order to guide respondents to identify their correct "usual residence." Determining the proper place to count such groups as college students, prisoners, and military personnel has always been complicated and controversial; major societal trends such as placement of children in shared custody arrangements and the prevalence of "snowbird" and "sunbird" populations who regularly move to favorable climates further make it difficult to specify ties to one household and one place. Once, Only Once, and in the Right Place reviews the evolution of current residence rules and the way residence concepts are presented to respondents. It proposes major changes to the basic approach of collecting residence information and suggests a program of research to improve the 2010 and future censuses.
Summary Book Review Behold the Mystery by Mark Hart:
Download or read book Behold the Mystery written by Mark Hart and published by The Word Among Us Press. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Catholics, the Mass should be a mountaintop experience for us. Often, though, we go through the motions at Mass without an appreciation for what has really happened. Popular speaker and author Mark Hart helps Catholics move beyond the repetition and ritual to see the Mass for what it really is: a heavenly banquet, a wedding feast, in which heaven and earth meet. In his engaging style, Hart guides readers toward a deeper understanding of the Mass—its roots in the Jewish Sabbath, its sacrificial character, and its signs and symbols. As we are told to “go in peace,” he inspires us to see the Mass as a place to be nourished so that we can further Christ’s mission in the world. In the last part of the book, Hart provides pithy answers to frequently asked questions, such as “Why can’t I leave right after Communion?” or “Why did the words change?” Finally, Hart offers ten things we can do to get more out of Mass.

Summary Book Review The effect of two exercise programs on the rehabilitation of individuals with colorectal cancer in an inpatient setting in Germany by Liat Levy:
Download or read book The effect of two exercise programs on the rehabilitation of individuals with colorectal cancer in an inpatient setting in Germany written by Liat Levy and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2005-02-14 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Research in the field of exercise therapy for cancer patients primarily focused on individuals with breast cancer who receive exercise interventions under outpatient conditions. This research study investigated individuals with colorectal cancer under inpatient conditions and aimed to broaden the application of exercise intervention treatments beyond that of breast cancer. The research included two study groups; standard exercise group (SEG, n=44) receiving indoor gymnastic exercise (IGE) and modified exercise group (MEG, n=39) receiving IGE plus additional outdoor walking activity. Participation in the specific exercise therapy program was independent of other therapies received in the inpatient rehabilitation program (IRP). The patients completed QOL questionnaires (QLQ-C30 & QLQ-CR38), psychological distress scale (HADS) and underwent treadmill stress-testing (TST) at the beginning (T1) and upon completion (T2) of the IRP. The QOL and the HADS questionnaires were administrated after a six month follow up (T3) proceeding the IRP completion. Results indicate significant QOL and HADS improvements in pre to post-testing for both study groups. The TST results indicate superior improvements in the MEG in comparison to the SEG. Some of the T1 to T2 QOL and HADS improvement maintained at T3. We conclude that 3 weeks IRP was adequate to reveal improvements in QOL, psychological measures and functional capacity. Future research should emphasize patient motivation for participation in physical activity after completing IRP. This background chapter encompasses the different fields of knowledge which are relevant to the present study, starting with colorectal cancer (epidemiology, etiology, pathology and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health), continuing with the subjects Quality of life, Movement and Sports in the Rehabilitation. The chapter ends with a review of previous physical activity and cancer studies. Descriptive epidemiological knowledge of colorectal cancer is essential for understanding the etiology of the disease and is used in the process of developing screening methods. Large bowel carcinoma is one of the most common cancers in the western world (15% of all cancer cases) and despite advanced diagnostic and therapeutic methods, the prognosis is relatively poor (Faivre et al. 2002). The WHO classification supplies the mortality data of colon cancer separately from rectum cancer. [...]
