Download or read book Those Distant Shores written by Santiago Sia and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Distant Shores” can mean various things. Literally, distant shores refer to one’s travel destinations. Figuratively, they represent human desires, ambitions, or goals. But “distant shores” also stand for the human yearning, imbedded in everyone, for final fulfillment. Such yearning makes human beings fundamentally restless. This work is about all of these forms of restlessness. In story form, it explores a fundamental philosophical theme: human transcendence. The narrative follows the life-journeys of three Filipino boyhood friends who had different ambitions in, and dreams about, life. A parallel story of another young man from Spain, who is coming to grips with his father's philosophical views on life, links up with one of these Filipinos during a trip to Ireland. As the four characters’ respective and very different narratives unfold, their dialogues develop and their reflections deepen, one is caught up in the challenges they have had to face, the goals they have achieved, and the failures and successes they have encountered. In different, and at times unexpected, ways they illustrate the restlessness of human nature itself.

It draws attention to shifting ecclesiastical and socio-political priorities, especially the decreased momentum of social justice advocacy and the growing missionary influence of churches emphasizing spiritual revival and personal prosperity. The book provides a thought-provoking assessment of U.S. Protestant involvements with Africa, and it proposes forms of engagement that build upon ecclesiastical dynamism within American and African contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decades after the War of 1812 were years of introspection for the fledgling American republic. Having twice prevailed against the military might of Great Britain, there was now no power on Earth ready, willing, and able to take on the United States. As America entered the 1840s and began expanding its dominion over North America and opening lucrative overseas markets in Asia and elsewhere, all that was needed to secure its place in the world was an alliance with a like-minded nation with the naval resources to guarantee the integrity of global trade routes and the financial rewards accruing to both parties of such an alliance. Captain Richard Cutler commands the new United States steam frigate Suwannee on a mission to the South Seas to the distant shores of New Zealand.

Download or read book The Distant Shore written by Linda Hale Bucklin and published by ePublishing Works!. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linda Hale Bucklin made a pact with her husband, Bill, to communicate after death. Here she shares her personal experience and other stories of love and faith in the afterlife. We all deal with grief in different ways. Bill, my beloved husband of forty years, died unexpectedly after a short illness. As shocked and devastated as I was, I came to accept that his not lingering was his final earthly gift to me. Moreover, he honored our agreement, coming to me in dreams and through music, showing me that death may end a life, but a relationship with one we love endures. Bill’s guiding spirit shows me I am stronger than I think. As he encourages me to appreciate the beauty and wholeness of this life, I find unexpected riches in my family, friends, and nature. I am comforted, knowing Bill and I will be together again one day. I hope this book will bring solace, peace, and hope to others. "If you have ever wondered if there is an afterlife, The Distant Shore will give you faith. This book will profoundly touch your heart, fill you with hope and joy, and encourage you to be more mindful in your daily life." ~SUSAN SMITH JONES, PHD "As Linda Bucklin’s friend and co-author of Come Rain or Come Shine: Friendships about Women, I’ve been one of her life witnesses for 25 years. The Distant Shore carries us into her lifelong quest for a deeper understanding and experience of love. We celebrate Linda’s successes, weep with compassion over her losses, and see our own lives differently as a result. Most of all, this book inspires us to reflect on our own connection to that distant shore." ~MARY KEIL, AUTHOR About Linda Hale Bucklin A fourth-generation San Franciscan, Linda Bucklin has worked in public relations and as a freelance writer. Her articles have appeared in House & Garden, Journal of Commerce, and Nob Hill Gazette. She now lives in Mill Valley and feels blessed to be surrounded by her three sons, two daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren. With Mary Keil, she wrote Come Rain or Come Shine (Adams Press, 1999), a book about women’s friendships. More recently, she received accolades for Beyond His Control (ePublishing Works, 2008), her memoir about growing up in a privileged family that was shattered with the suicide of her beloved mother. The book went on to become a New York Times Bestseller in paperback and ebook editions. The Love of Angels (ePublishing Works, 2016), her third book, a collection of stories, including the author’s own, chronicles encounters with angels, spiritual beings, and living people who show up to remind us of love’s power. In The Distant Shore, her fourth book, a combination of her thoughts and memories together with others’ stories, written after her husband died in 2016, she explores the possibility of life after death. Linda served for many years as a trustee of Grace Cathedral. A nationally ranked tennis player, in 2006 she became #1 in the U.S. in 60’s mixed doubles with her long-time partner Charlie Hoeveler. Linda now holds six national titles. In addition to her family and friends, her other passions include duplicate bridge (she recently became a Life Master), fly-fishing, and camping under the star-studded Montana sky.

Summary Book Review Distant Shore: a Memoir by Alvin L. Simpson:

Download or read book Distant Shore: a Memoir written by Alvin L. Simpson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the stormy night of September 16, 1967, young Marine Alvin Simpson faced the terrors of a long night at sea on a Higgins boat during a typhoon. Men all around him were convulsing, sickened by the waves, the cold, and diesel smoke. The trials of that night on the open sea strengthened Alvins faith in God as he remembered to pray the way his grandfather had taught him. And it was this faith that sustained him through the many months and battles yet to come during his time in Vietnam. Distant Shore: A Memoir is the story of Alvins life, written to share with his daughter Tara, her children, and their posterity. He tells his story as an apology to Tara for not being able to answer her questions about Vietnam while she was growing up. His story takes the reader from the streets of Cleveland to the jungles of Vietnam. Alvin shares his own family history and the values he learned growing up in a close-knit African American community. Born on July 4, 1946, Alvin praises his mother for raising him and four siblings as a single parent. He credits his grandfather, a Presbyterian preacher, for being his model of spirituality. Alvins boyhood dream of becoming a Marine became reality when he enlisted after high school graduation. He served with the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division in 1967 and 1968 in the Republic of South Vietnam, attaining the rank of Sergeant. After being released from the Marine Corps, Alvin began his college education at The Ohio State University, where he also ran varsity track. He earned his B.S. in Education in 1972 and his M.A. in Education in 1974. Alvins career as a Social Studies teacher for Columbus Public Schools began in 1972. He also coached track and field and was named Coach of the Year in 1996 and 2001. After 32 years of teaching and mentoring students, Alvin retired in 2004. Once a Marine, always a Marine is the credo Alvin lives by. Today he is active in several veterans groups and has journeyed to the Wall many times to pay respects to friends who left the world in Vietnam. We see dimly in the present what is small and what is great. The Present Crisis James Russell Lowell
