Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As . . . newer approaches [to biblical criticism] become more established and influential, it is essential that students and other serious readers of the Bible be exposed to them and become familiar with them. That is the main impetus behind the present volume, which is offered as a textbook for those who wish to go further than the approaches covered in To Each Its Own Meaning by exploring more recent or experimental ways of reading." „from the introduction This book is a supplement and sequel to To Each Its Own Meaning, edited by Steven L. McKenzie and Stephen R. Haynes, which introduced the reader to the most important methods of biblical criticism and remains a widely used classroom textbook. This new volume explores recent developments in, and approaches to, biblical criticism since 1999. Leading contributors define and describe their approach for non-specialist readers, using examples from the Old and New Testament to help illustrate their discussion. Topics include cultural criticism, disability studies, queer criticism, postmodernism, ecological criticism, new historicism, popular culture, postcolonial criticism, and psychological criticism. Each section includes a list of key terms and definitions and suggestions for further reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the American psyche, the "e;Wild West"e; is a mythic-historical place where our nation's values and ideologies were formed. In this violent and uncertain world, the cowboy is the ultimate hero, fighting the bad guys, forging notions of manhood, and delineating what constitutes honor as he works to build civilization out of wilderness. Tales from this mythical place are best known from that most American of media: film. In the Greco-Roman societies that form the foundation of Western civilization, similar narratives were presented in what for them was the most characteristic, and indeed most filmic, genre: epic. Like Western film, the epics of Homer and Virgil focus on the mythic-historical past and its warriors who worked to establish the ideological framework of their respective civilizations. Through a close reading of films like High Noon and Shane, this book examines the surprising connections between these seemingly disparate yet closely related genres, shedding light on both in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging discussion of Kabbalah—from the mystical trends of medieval Judaism to modern Hasidism—one of the world’s foremost scholars considers different visions of the nature of the sacred text and of the methods to interpret it. Moshe Idel takes as a starting point the fact that the postbiblical Jewish world lost its geographical center with the destruction of the temple and so was left with a textual center, the Holy Book. Idel argues that a text-oriented religion produced language-centered forms of mysticism. Against this background, the author demonstrates how various Jewish mystics amplified the content of the Scriptures so as to include everything: the world, or God, for example. Thus the text becomes a major realm for contemplation, and the interpretation of the text frequently becomes an encounter with the deepest realms of reality. Idel delineates the particular hermeneutics belonging to Jewish mysticism, investigates the progressive filling of the text with secrets and hidden levels of meaning, and considers in detail the various interpretive strategies needed to decodify the arcane dimensions of the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The I Ching has influenced thinkers and artists throughout the history of Chinese philosophy. This new, accessible translation of the entire early text brings to life the hidden meanings and importance of China's oldest classical texts. Complemented throughout by insightful commentaries, the I Ching: A Critical Translation of the Ancient Text simplifies the unique system of hexagrams lying at the centre of the text and introduces the cultural significance of key themes including yin and yang, gender and ethics. As well as depicting all possible ethical situations, this new translation shows how the hexagram figures can represent social relationships and how the order of lines can be seen as a natural metaphor for higher or lower social rank. Introduced by Hon Tze-Ki, an esteemed scholar of the text, this up-to-date translation uncovers and explains both the philosophical and political interpretations of the text. For a better understanding of the philosophical and cosmological underpinning the history of Chinese philosophy, the I Ching is an invaluable starting point.

Download or read book The Bible With and Without Jesus written by Amy-Jill Levine and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editors of The Jewish Annotated New Testament show how and why Jews and Christians read many of the same Biblical texts – including passages from the Pentateuch, the Prophets, and the Psalms – differently. Exploring and explaining these diverse perspectives, they reveal more clearly Scripture’s beauty and power. Esteemed Bible scholars and teachers Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Z. Brettler take readers on a guided tour of the most popular Hebrew Bible passages quoted in the New Testament to show what the texts meant in their original contexts and then how Jews and Christians, over time, understood those same texts. Passages include the creation of the world, the role of Adam and Eve, the Suffering Servant of Isiah, the book of Jonah, and Psalm 22, whose words, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me,” Jesus quotes as he dies on the cross. Comparing various interpretations – historical, literary, and theological - of each ancient text, Levine and Brettler offer deeper understandings of the original narratives and their many afterlives. They show how the text speaks to different generations under changed circumstances, and so illuminate the Bible’s ongoing significance. By understanding the depth and variety by which these passages have been, and can be, understood, The Bible With and Without Jesus does more than enhance our religious understandings, it helps us to see the Bible as a source of inspiration for any and all readers.

Summary Book Review The algorithm of the universe by Ancient Philosophy:

Download or read book The algorithm of the universe written by Ancient Philosophy and published by Ancient Philosophy. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many attempts to explain the existence of the universe. Even the observable universe around us is filled with unknowns and numerous unexplainable phenomena, let alone the unobservable universe. Each and every theory proposed is just trying to find an explanation for the existence of the observable universe around us, ignoring the fact that it is potentially possible there is an invisible universe which reveals itself as we find newer ways to observe it. We need to first and foremost be able to abstract this universe as we observe it to be just a representation of something else underneath that is projected as this world around us by our descriptive thoughts. Then and only then can we find an explanation that is inclusive of everything that the universe is. As far as we search for the origin of just these appearances of descriptive thoughts, we will only dabble with physics, chemistry, mathematics and computations. It should be recognised that Wolfram introduces a very good concept. Simple things recurse to form complex worlds. But this without the correct transformation remains simply a recognisable pattern. How does this recognisable pattern go on to become this complex appearance of reality that we observe around us is up in the air. The ancient Sanskrit literature has an in-depth explanation of how this reality around us works and how it has come to be this. It just needs the correct context around which to translate these texts to understand it. For a long time I wondered what would be the best way to explain the algorithm of the universe as seen by the ancients and explained in the Sanskrit literature. I could explain it by using translation of the Sanskrit verses in a certain order. But I find that they do not take the reader on the journey that is necessary to understand and form the correct thoughts to understand the working of and creation of this reality around us. I thought I would write it as a description of astrology i.e., jyothiSha which, if we look at from the ancient view, is actually a science that tells us how to control the distribution of seeking which drives the formation of this reality around us and hence control this reality itself. But, I find that the term has been highly mangled with all sorts of meaning associated with it. I find, even if there was a very beautiful science explained it becomes very difficult to break these pre-conceived perceptions to get the reader to read objectively and understand. Finally, I have decided the best way is to use the computers that we have created and the AI algorithms that we are trying to code as the best way to describe it, because this was my primary driver to want to understand the Sanskrit literature and to debug the working of the universe. The underlying curiosity to understand why and how the AI that we write does not even seem to be a “fake imitation” of the working of the universe around us. The underlying curiosity to understand how this reality around me is so completely immersive while the virtual reality that we create does not even come near this immersive experience that we have with reality. The curiosity to understand if it is possible for us to create a hardware and software that comes even a little bit close to the kind of intelligence, knowledge and beauty in the algorithm of this reality around us. This has been my driver to decode and understand the Sanskrit literature. So, I find that is the best way to describe the algorithm. In this book I explain the algorithms proposed in the Sanskrit literatures for the working of this reality around us. I also compare these concepts to what we have currently present in computers and explain how they are different from what is explained in these books and why what we have in computers are not sufficient to create the AI that we want to create. Further, I try to put down my thoughts on how or what can be done to create a system that can be used to implement a AI system.
