Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Harry Truman was a disappointment to the Democrats, and a godsend to the Republicans. Every attempt to paint Truman with the grace, charm, and grandeur of Franklin Delano Roosevelt had been a dismal failure: Truman's virtues were simpler, plainer, more direct. The challenges he faced--stirrings of civil rights and southern resentment at home, and communist aggression and brinkmanship abroad--could not have been more critical. By the summer of 1948 the prospects of a second term for Truman looked bleak. Newspapers and popular opinion nationwide had all but anointed as president Thomas Dewey, the Republican New York Governor. Truman could not even be certain of his own party's nomination: the Democrats, still in mourning for FDR, were deeply riven, with Henry Wallace and Strom Thurmond leading breakaway Progressive and Dixiecrat factions. Finally, with ingenuity born of desperation, Truman's aides hit upon a plan: get the president in front of as many regular voters as possible, preferably in intimate settings, all across the country. To the surprise of everyone but Harry Truman, it worked. Whistle Stop is the first book of its kind: a micro-history of the summer and fall of 1948 when Truman took to the rails, crisscrossing the country from June right up to Election Day in November. The tour and the campaign culminated with the iconic image of a grinning, victorious Truman holding aloft the famous Chicago Tribune headline: "Dewey Defeats Truman."

On the basis of the confidential and unpublished jury reports it was made possible to reconstruct the decision-making discussions within the committees to confirm or prevent prize-winners by majority votings. The book also makes clear that Pulitzer awards during more than eight decades went to a broad spectrum of American newspapers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book explains the ambiguities of wartime changes in the private and public lives of New Zealand women. It considers women as mothers, wives and lovers, as well as workers, using many examples from real lives. Deborah Montgomerie's main argument is that despite the changes, the war was essentially a conservative period, pointing out that understanding the continuities in gender relations is as important as cataloguing female 'firsts'. Her book stylishly challenges accepted wisdom and offers a clear, fresh view of a period often viewed through the blurry lens of nostalgia and anecdote."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a systematic study of historical data, this book argues that a small group of New York banks, by means of term loans and working in close collaboration with their affiliated life insurance companies, exerted a strong influence over the supply of money and credit, and thus over the entire economy throughout the years of the depression. The book analyzes the growth of term loans under the depression, the concentration of the loans in a handful of powerful New York banks, the interplay between these banks and large life insurance companies in the capital market, and the resulting economic consequences. It also details the changes that took place in the leadership within the financial heirarchy during the depression: the J. D. Rockefeller interests replaced the Morgan-First National interests as the country's dominant financial power - a change that has escaped previous scholarly notice."

Summary Book Review "The New York Times" Facing World War II by Erika J. Fischer:

Download or read book "The New York Times" Facing World War II written by Erika J. Fischer and published by Peter Lang Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 1990 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1941, the Pulitzer Prize Board at the School of Journalism of Columbia University gave a special award to the 'New York Times' «for the public educational value of its foreign news report, exemplified by its scope, by excellence of writing and presentation, and supplementary background information, illustration, and interpretation» during 1940. This book contains great parts of the award-winning exhibit of one of the leading newspapers of the world. The material presented not only demonstrates the world-wide correspondence of the 'New York Times' one year before the U.S. became involved in World War II, it also gives a fascinating insight into the number and names of all foreign correspondents and the costs for transmitting the articles world-wide by cable exactly fifty years ago.
