Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For years, I had been contemplating on writing a book. I just could not decide what to write about. Several ideas floated through my head but somehow, none of them stayed long enough. And then it happened: a confrontation with my daughter that shook me to the core. I decided to embark on this difficult journey of remembering in the hope that I may spare some parents the pain I went through. I also wanted to explore the idea of unconditional love. At first, I did not know what these words truly meant; only that its supposed to be the kind of love parents are expected to have for their children. It seemed easy enough. After all, I have always felt the call to motherhood at the core of my being. Just love your child, right? But how? For someone who grew up without any role model for a mother, for someone forced by circumstances to raise her child alone, it can be quite a challenge."

Download or read book My Child, My Teacher written by Karen Sanford and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Child, My Teacher is an account of a mother and daughter both grappling with the daughter’s mental issues, the exhaustion and frustration of navigating the often ineffective, uncaring, and mismanaged justice, social and mental health systems, and the indelible impact it is having on the relationship between mother and daughter. The book assumes the perspective from a parent, in this case, a woman who through unforeseen circumstances of her own found herself having to navigate the bulk of this burden alone. It chronicles the loving yet turbulent relationship between mother and daughter and positively chronicles their way to acceptance and understanding. Her experiences reveal in sometimes painful bas relief, that life can present many challenges, some unspeakable, while others can be joyful beyond the imagination. The book takes a look at how when the justice system, social services, and mental health mechanism converge, sometimes the results can be disastrous as some of the examples show. But the book also provides links to possible solutions to families in need. As this whole situation is still a work in progress, the relationship between mother and daughter is evolving as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This funny, touching picture book celebrates the difference a good teacher can make. Written as a thank-you note to a special teacher from the student who never forgot her, this moving story makes a great classroom read-aloud, and a perfect back-to-school gift for students and teachers! Dear Teacher, Whenever I had something to tell you, I tugged on your shirt and whispered in your ear. This time I’m writing a letter. So begins this heartfelt picture book about a girl who prefers running and jumping to listening and learning—and the teacher who gently inspires her. From stomping through creeks on a field trip to pretending to choke when called upon to read aloud, this book’s young heroine would be a challenge to any teacher. But this teacher isn’t just any teacher. By listening carefully and knowing just the right thing to say, she quickly learns that the girl’s unruly behavior is due to her struggles with reading. And at the very end, we learn what this former student is now: a teacher herself. From award winning author Deborah Hopkinson and acclaimed illustrator Nancy Carpenter, this picture book is made to be treasured by both those who teach and those who learn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 1995, Lies My Teacher Told Me has gone on to win an American Book Award, the Oliver Cromwell Cox Award for Distinguished Anti-Racist Scholarship, and to sell over half a million copies in its various editions. What started out as a survey of the twelve leading American history textbooks has ended up being what the San Francisco Chronicle calls “an extremely convincing plea for truth in education.” In Lies My Teacher Told Me, James W. Loewen brings history alive in all its complexity and ambiguity. Beginning with pre-Columbian history and ranging over characters and events as diverse as Reconstruction, Helen Keller, the first Thanksgiving, and the Mai Lai massacre, Loewen offers an eye-opening critique of existing textbooks, and a wonderful retelling of American history as it should—and could—be taught to American students. This 10th anniversary edition features a handsome new cover and a new introduction by the author.

Download or read book My Teacher Is GAy written by Peter Van Maaren and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-06 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a teacher, especially a gay teacher, respond to the gradual increase in ethnic minorities in the student body? My Teacher is Gay tells the story of Peter van Maaren, who recounts his experiences at a community college in Amsterdam as the school undergoes significant changes. His upbeat and sometimes disconcerting stories involve not only his interactions with students but also his fellow faculty members and school administration. As it turned out, thanks to his openness and sense of humor his sexual orientation was not an issue for most of the students and their parents. It was often much more difficult to convince his colleagues and the administrators that a gay teacher does not automatically pose a threat to the school. His goal was to show that cultivating mutual understanding, respect and tolerance can actually make a positive contribution to the learning atmosphere. By being open and honest about his identity, he achieved far more with his students than he did when the school administration ordered him to keep quiet about his orientation and try to ignore any remarks about it. The Gay Krant editorial staff in Best has received a growing number of complaints about intolerance in education. Students today are afraid to be open about their feelings, and teachers report being forced back “in the closet.” In response to this alarming trend we publish interviews in the paper. Many are anonymous because the subjects are so afraid to go public. Consequently I am thrilled that Peter van Maaren is the first to come forward to share his story. A highly worth reading, and at times moving, account. Now we can only hope that politicians, policymakers and other involved parties will learn something from it. - Henk Krol, Gay Krant editor-in-chief Education is not a matter of filling a vessel. Education is certainly not a budgeting exercise for administrators. Education is about lighting a fire of wisdom and humanity. Let this book by Peter van Maaren offer inspiration to do just that. Jan Marijnissen, floor leader of the Dutch Socialist Party

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now adapted for young readers ages 12 through 18, the national bestseller that makes real American history come alive in all of its conflict, drama, and complexity Lies My Teacher Told Me is one of the most important—and successful—history books of our time. Having sold nearly two million copies, the book won an American Book Award and the Oliver Cromwell Cox Award for Distinguished Anti-Racist Scholarship. Now Rebecca Stefoff, the acclaimed nonfiction children's writer who adapted Howard Zinn's bestseller A People's History of the United States for young readers, makes Loewen's beloved work available to younger students. Essential reading in our age of fake news and slippery, sloppy history, Lies My Teacher Told Me: Young Readers' Edition cuts through the mindless optimism and outright lies found in most textbooks that are often not even really written by their "authors." Loewen is, as historian Carol Kammen has said, the history teacher we all should have had. Beginning with pre-Columbian history and then covering characters and events as diverse as the first Thanksgiving, Helen Keller, the My Lai massacre, 9/11, and the Iraq War, Loewen's lively, provocative telling of American history is a "counter-textbook that retells the story of the American past" (The Nation). This streamlined young readers' edition is rich in vivid details and quotations from primary sources that poke holes in the textbook versions of history and help students develop a deeper understanding of our world. Lies My Teacher Told Me: Young Readers' Edition brings this classic text to a new generation of readers (and their parents and teachers) who will welcome and value its honesty, its humor, and its integrity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes and most of the time, we feel like this house behind me - abandoned, rejected, mistreated, voided and most of all no love. We live in a society where truth is validated through people - a society in which love is desired through the flesh and rarely through the teachings of God. God can offer you far more than anything the world can give. He can teach you how to love yourself and how to not to seek it from others in this world. Searching for love from others prior to loving yourself can end in turmoil; wanting to fill a void in my naive life, yearning to be loved, lead me to loving a married man. Before I knew what was happening, my life began spiraling out of control. One of the worst mistakes I made in my young life. This box of love I received from him seemed so exciting and full of expectations from the outer appearance, but when I opened, it was nothing but emptiness and loneliness. I was committing a sin by being a married mans mistress as he was being the adulterer. God seemed to be the only outlet in helping me out of my situation. Through Him I learned to first love myself and how to love others. With those qualities and other teachings, God will send you a spouse and not the estranged, flesh-driven relationships the world will try to give you. Through Him you will develop the qualities of governing Kings and Queens. Hopefully my willingness to be transparent about past relationships sleeping with a married man and having an abusive husband can help you see the signs before you walk into estranged situations like I did. This book will teach you the art of how to love in every aspect. I hope this book helps you and inspires you to help others. Good luck and remember Proverbs 8: to acquire wisdom is to love yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers both theoretical and research-based accounts from mothers in academia who must balance their own intricate knowledge of school systems, curriculum and pedagogy with their children’s education and school lives. It explores the contextual advantages and disadvantages of "knowing too much" and how this impacts children’s actions, scholastics and developing consciousness along various lines. Additionally, it allows teachers, administrators and researchers to critically examine their own discourses and those of their students to better navigate their professional and domestic roles. Gathering narratives from academic women in traditional and nontraditional maternal roles, this volume presents both contemporary and retrospective experiences of what it’s like to raise children amidst educational and sociocultural change.
