Summary Book Review Mutiny on the High Seas by Edgar A. Haine:
Download or read book Mutiny on the High Seas written by Edgar A. Haine and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book relates sixty-six interesting and true tales of mutiny, murder, and plunder on the high seas between 1578 and 1933. The collection includes descriptions and summaries of the alleged treason on Sir Francis Drake's Golden Hind in 1578; Henry Hudson's mutiny-inspired death in Canada in 1611; the saga of Captain Bligh and HMS Bounty in 1789 (which has been made into at least three movies); the historically significant uprisings in the British Royal Navy in 1797; the bloodiest mutiny ever on HMS Hermione in 1797, including the vessel's traitorous delivery to the Spanish enemy and its subsequent recapture by expert action on the part of a British man-of-war; the Plattsburg mutiny and murders in 1816; mutiny on the slave ship Creole in 1841; and the infamous insurrection and hangings on the USS Somers in 1844. Tragedies resulting from violent outbreaks on such illustrious ships as HMS Wagner; the Globe, the Batavia, the Buckman, the Jefferson Borden, the Lennie, the Pedro Varella, and many other ships are fully detailed and are fascinating to read. Mutiny on the High Seas also considers the celebrated revolutionary insurrection on the Russian battleship Potemkin in 1905 (which became the subject of a Soviet movie in 1925) and World War I mutinies in the German navy that speeded the demise of the German Empire. The widespread Invergordon conspiracy in the British Royal Navy in 1931 and the Javanese revolt and seizure of the Dutch battleship Ze Zeven Provincien in 1933 represent two outstanding and decisive marine rebellions in modern times. In addition to the individual mutiny stories, this volume contains a comprehensive introduction that outlines the nature of mutiny, its causes, its implementation, and the resulting penalties. Nearly fifty illustrations and two appendices--devoted to punishment for insurrections and firsthand mutiny anecdotes--supplement the text. Mutiny on the High Seas provides intriguing material for readers who relish stories about mischief and adventure on the world's oceans long ago.

Summary Book Review The Killer Trail by Bertrand Taithe:
Download or read book The Killer Trail written by Bertrand Taithe and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-10-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Killer Trail tells the tale of one of the most notorious atrocities to take place during the European 'scramble for Africa', a real life story of insane violence in the heart of an exotic continent that eerily prefigures fictional accounts such as The Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now. The Voulet-Chanoine mission left Dakar in 1898 for the centre of Africa and the region of Lake Chad with the aim of establishing effective borders between the French and British empires while 'pacifying' a notoriously belligerent region. Wreaking havoc as it went along, the mission degenerated into an extraordinary display of colonial violence and cruelty, leaving a trail of pillage, murder, and enslavement of the local inhabitants in its wake. When the story of its outrages reached Paris in 1899 there was a public uproar and a second mission was dispatched to investigate. Eventually, on July 14 1899, the two missions met and confronted each other in a dramatic shootout, which led Voulet and Chanoine to declare their independence from France and their desire to establish an African kingdom under their own rule. But their mad dreams of kingship were soon cut short when they fell prey to a mutiny among the African soldiers under their command in which they were both killed. The whole bizarre tale of Voulet and Chanoine's mission sharply divided opinion back home in France but was eventually explained away as the action of two deranged minds. Yet, as Bertrand Taithe shows, it was not simply a tale of individual insanity. In many ways, the actions of Voulet and Chanoine and their men simply took the violence of European colonialism to a logical extreme, while the way in which the whole affair was soon forgotten is highly revealing of western attitudes to imperial excess in Africa and elsewhere.

What does the brusque werewolf dewan know? On whose side is the ever-stylish vampire Lord Akeldama? Only one thing is certain: a large-scale plot is under way, and when it comes to fruition, Sophronia must be ready to save her friends, her school, and all of London from disaster--in decidedly dramatic fashion, of course. What will become of our proper young heroine when she puts her years of training to the test? Find out in this highly anticipated and thrilling conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Finishing School series!

Download or read book The Victorian Era in Twenty-First Century Children’s and Adolescent Literature and Culture written by Sara K. Day and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian literature for audiences of all ages provides a broad foundation upon which to explore complex and evolving ideas about young people. In turn, this collection argues, contemporary works for young people that draw on Victorian literature and culture ultimately reflect our own disruptions and upheavals, particularly as they relate to child and adolescent readers and our experiences of them. The essays therein suggest that we struggle now, as the Victorians did then, to assert a cohesive understanding of young readers, and that this lack of cohesion is a result of or a parallel to the disruptions taking place on a larger (even global) scale.
