Summary Book Review Sixty, Sexy, and Successful: A Guide for Aging Male Baby Boomers by Robert Schwalbe Ph.D.:
Download or read book Sixty, Sexy, and Successful: A Guide for Aging Male Baby Boomers written by Robert Schwalbe Ph.D. and published by ABC-CLIO. This book was released on 2008-05-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a psychotherapist who focuses on working with the issues that challenge midlife and older men, Robert Schwalbe feels that the 60s and beyond can be the most rewarding or the most miserable period in a man's life. An aging male baby boomer looking at 60 encounters very specific psychological and physical changes. The impact of these changes can be felt in relationship to others and in how a man sees himself in his world. Does he continue to fit in? In particular, how a man adapts to being in his 60s is an indicator of how he feels about living the rest of his life. Dr. Schwalbe knows from personal experience, as well as from his patients, the challenges produced by anxiety and depression in dealing with aging in a youth-oriented society. He looks at competition in the gym, sports field, financial and business arena, the political world to the social and sexual world and urges men to adapt to the outside forces. The key is in the expectations and how to recognize and plan for them. Candid and straightforward talk with vignettes drawn from Dr. Schwalbe's practice illustrate problems and solutions related to marriage, relationships, career, retirement (don't, he urges), divorce, death of a partner, fitness, nutrition, sexual behavior, dealing with adult children, lifestyle changes, financial planning, ageism, and many other topics. Schwalbe presents a heart-felt and therapeutically tested guide to keeping things in perspective in order to maintain self confidence and self esteem. Most importantly, this book is directed to the aging male baby boomer (and to those who love him, know him, or live with him). It tells him that he is not alone and that the intimate thoughts that he has about his aging body and mind are shared by millions of men who are in their 60s and are dealing with their new age.

Download or read book Angel Dorothy written by Jane Brown and published by Unbound Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angel Dorothy is the inspiring biography of a formidable woman: wealthy American heiress Dorothy Elmhirst, who poured her considerable resources into founding Dartington Hall in 1925. What started as a progressive school rapidly transformed into a magnet for artists, architects, writers, philosophers and musicians, creating an exceptional centre for British cultural life. It was at Dartington in Devon that the Labour Party’s post-war manifesto was written and the Arts Council was conceived. Born in Washington, DC, into the influential Whitney family, Dorothy was a national darling: bells rang, flags flew and the American Navy’s new fast tugboat was named Dorothy. Orphaned at seventeen, she started giving away her inheritance at eighteen and buried herself in social and political work. She maintained her status as an unmarried woman until she fell in love with and married her first husband, Willard Straight, in 1911. Following Willard’s untimely death, Dorothy worked herself into a breakdown trying to fulfil his wishes. She recovered with the help of Leonard Elmhirst, an Englishman who shared her liberal beliefs; they married and moved to England in 1925 to start what would become Dartington Hall. In this vividly told biography, Jane Brown follows Dorothy from one side of the Atlantic to the other, a journey Dorothy made one hundred times to spread her political beliefs, her passion for education and her support of the arts for all. She traces the evolution of Dartington, from its restoration to its farming and forestry projects, and to its time as a home for the period’s greatest artists and intellectuals.

Download or read book 14 Miles written by DW Gibson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An esteemed journalist delivers a compelling on-the-ground account of the construction of President Trump’s border wall in San Diego—and the impact on the lives of local residents. In August of 2019, Donald Trump finished building his border wall—at least a portion of it. In San Diego, the Army Corps of engineers completed two years of construction on a 14-mile steel beamed barrier that extends eighteen-feet high and cost a staggering $147 million. As one border patrol agent told reporters visiting the site, “It was funded and approved and it was built under his administration. It is Trump’s wall.” 14 Miles is a definitive account of all the dramatic construction, showing readers what it feels like to stand on both sides of the border looking up at the imposing and controversial barrier. After the Department of Homeland Security announced an open call for wall prototypes in 2017, DW Gibson, an award-winning journalist and Southern California native, began visiting the construction site and watching as the prototype samples were erected. Gibson spent those two years closely observing the work and interviewing local residents to understand how it was impacting them. These include April McKee, a border patrol agent leading a recruiting program that trains teenagers to work as agents; Jeff Schwilk, a retired Marine who organizes pro-wall rallies as head of the group San Diegans for Secure Borders; Roque De La Fuente, an eccentric millionaire developer who uses the construction as a promotional opportunity; and Civile Ephedouard, a Haitian refugee who spent two years migrating through Central America to the United States and anxiously awaits the results of his asylum case. Fascinating, propulsive, and incredibly timely, 14 Miles is an important work that explains not only how the wall has reshaped our landscape and countless lives but also how its shadow looms over our very identity as a nation.
