Summary Book Review Global perspectives on higher education and lifelong learners by Maria Slowey:
Download or read book Global perspectives on higher education and lifelong learners written by Maria Slowey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global expansion of participation rates in higher education continue more or less unabated. However, while the concept of lifelong learning has figured prominently in national and international educational policy discourse for more than three decades, its implications for the field of higher education has remained relatively underdeveloped. This book focuses on a particular dimension of the lifelong learning: higher education for those who have not progressed directly from school to higher education. Some will embark on undergraduate programmes as mature students, part-time and/or distance students; others wish to return to higher education after having completed (or not completed) a previous academic programme, while increasing numbers participate in postgraduate and continuing studies for a complex mix of professional and personal reasons. Adopting a comparative and international longitudinal perspective which goes beyond a snapshot view by building on the cases of a core group of ten OECD countries, this timely book investigates the ways in which important new developments impacting on higher education crystallise around the lifelong learning agenda: new technology and open source resources; the changing role of the state and market in higher education; the blurring of public and private boundaries; issues of equity and access in a time of global economic turmoil; the increased emphasis on research and international league tables; the changing nature of the education; and, the complex interaction of international, national and regional expectations which governments and other stakeholders have of universities and other public and private institutions of higher education. While focusing on the situation in Canada, USA, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and a wide variety of European countries, the book also assesses the issues from the perspective of developing countries. Launched by the Irish Minister of Education, this timely book is a must read. Find out more here: http://www4.dcu.ie/ovpli/herc/book_launch

Book excerpt: This report discusses the response of colleges and universities in the United States to the need of graduate students to become equipped to make personal and public policy decisions as citizens of an international society. Curriculum changes are showing a tightening of foreign language standards in schools of higher education and, throughout the curriculum, faculty are including material from other countries and advances in computer and satellite communication to enhance the international experience without leaving the classroom. Additionally, the international focus on higher education has been boosted through a major U.S. initiative that tripled federal spending on undergraduate study abroad. The United States is also cooperating with foreign representatives in working with the Economic Community and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization to standardize educational credential reporting, licensing, and certification. Governments are also looking with increased regulatory fervor upon joint educational business ventures. Steps that faculty and administrators can take to improve international education on their campuses are explored, including widening the curriculum to expose students to other cultures, widening opportunities for international contact, and evaluating organizational structures that help or hinder international activities. Contains approximately 200 references and an index. (GLR).

Summary Book Review Global Perspectives on Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education Institutions by Magd, Hesham:
Download or read book Global Perspectives on Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education Institutions written by Magd, Hesham and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-09-17 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality accreditation in higher education institutions (HEIs) is currently a buzzword. The need to maintain high-quality education standards is a critical requirement for HEIs to remain competitive in the market and for government and regulatory bodies to ensure the quality standards of programs offered. From being an implicit requirement that is internally addressed, quality assurance activities become an explicit requirement that is regularly audited and appraised by national and international accreditation agencies. HEIs are voluntarily integrating quality management systems (QMS), institutional and program-specific, in response to the political and competitive environment in which it exists. Through its higher education department or by creating non-profitable accreditation bodies, many governments have implemented a quality framework for licensing HEIs and invigilates its adherence based on which accreditation statuses are granted for HEIs. Global Perspectives on Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education Institutions provides a comprehensive framework for HEIs to address quality assurance and quality accreditation requirements and serves as a practical tool to develop and deploy well-defined quality management systems in higher education. The book focuses on the critical aspects of quality assurance; the need to develop a concise and agile vision, mission, values, and graduate attributes; and to develop a system that effectively aligns the various activities of the HEI to the attainment of the strategic priorities listed in the institutional plans. The chapters each cover the various facets of the quality assurance framework and accreditation agencies' requirements with practical examples of each. This book is useful for HEI administrators, quality assurance specialists in HEIs, heads of academic departments, internal auditors, external auditors, and other practitioners of quality, along with stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in quality assurance and accreditation in higher education.
