This book was released on 2009-05-14 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International institutions are powerful players on the world stage, and every student of international law requires a clear understanding of the forces that shape them. For example, with increasing global influence comes the need for internal control and accountability. This thought-provoking overview considers these and other forces that govern international institutions such as the UN, EU and WTO, and the complex relationship that exists between international organizations and their member states. Covering recent scholarly developments, such as the rise of constitutionalism and global administrative law, and analysing the impact of important cases, such as the ICJ's Genocide case (2007) and the Behrami judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (2007), its clarity of explanation and analytical approach allow students to understand and think critically about a complex subject.

Download or read book Latin American and Caribbean International Institutional Law written by Marco Odello and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one of the few comprehensive works focusing on the sub-regional institutions in the Latin American and Caribbean region. These organisations and institutions enrich the co-operation at sub-regional level, but, in most cases, are neglected in legal literature. They have mainly economic purposes but they also contribute to new forms of institutional co-operation in other areas, including financial, political and social matters. The volume addresses some of the most representative of these institutions, such as the Mercosur, the Andean Community and sub-regional financial organisations (e.g. Central American Bank for Economic Integration and Andean Development Corporation) as well as new developments including the UNASUR and the Alliance for the Pacific. It provides updated information on the structure and changes of the institutions, and constitutes a valuable resource for those wishing to keep pace with legal developments in the fast-moving world of international institutional law. The book will appeal to a wide audience including researchers and practitioners specialising in international law and international organisations and related disciplines. Marco Odello, JD (Rome), LLM (Nottingham), PhD (Madrid) is a Reader in Law at Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK. Francesco Seatzu, JD (Cagliari), PhD (Nottingham) is Professor of International and European Law at the University of Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy.

Summary Book Review Membership in International Organizations by Gerd Droesse:

Download or read book Membership in International Organizations written by Gerd Droesse and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-19 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes that fundamental concepts of institutional law need to be rethought and revised. Contrary to conventional wisdom, international organizations do not need to have members, and the members do not need to be states and international organizations. Private sector entities may, for instance, also be full members. Furthermore, international organizations do not need to possess international legal personality, nor is their autonomy a corollary of their personality. Moreover, the notion of “subject of international law” also needs to be reconsidered and the very concepts and definitions of “intergovernmental organization” and “international organization” need to change and be defined in a wider manner. In this publication the legal implications of membership are analyzed and a new analytical framework for international organizations is proposed. The argument is propounded that the power of creation of new organizations has passed over to international organizations and other entities while an outlook on future development is also presented. Dr. Gerd Droesse is a recognized specialist in institutional law, international administrative law, complex institutional and financial policy matters and corporate governance issues, with over 30 years of experience in working for international organizations in senior and management positions. He was the Legal Counsel/Acting General Counsel of the Green Climate Fund and assisted the World Green Economy Organization as General Counsel in its transition to a new type of intergovernmental organization.

Summary Book Review Institutionalised International Law by Matthias Ruffert:

Download or read book Institutionalised International Law written by Matthias Ruffert and published by Hart Pub Limited. This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook, first published in German, explains and analyses not only the structures of international organisations in general, but also focuses on the interplay between the creation of institutional structures and important substantive areas of public international law. In the first and second parts of the book the general aspects of the law of international organisations are surveyed, and in the third part international security, human rights protection, trade, development and environmental protection are analysed in terms of the interplay between substantive and institutional law. This third part is built on the assumption that the law of international organisations needs to be studied 'in action', ie by looking at highly institutionalised areas of international law as a way of analysing the mutual influences between institutional and substantive international law. This is the first book on international law to bring together institutional and substantive aspects in this comparable manner. It is aimed at students of the law of international organisations, the social sciences and political science and practitioners in the field of international institutions.
