Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Widmer reconsiders the significance of the canonical portrayal of Moses as intercessor. At the heart of this study is a close reading of Exodus 32-34 and Numbers 13-14 with particular focus on Moses' prayers. By examining intertextual associations between these two accounts and other texts, the author argues for not only the paradigmatic nature of these prayers but also the intrinsic connection between prayer and biblical theology.

Download or read book Intercessory Prayer written by Philip Clements-Jewery and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is prayer possible? How does prayer work? Why is it necessary to ask for God's gifts? Intercessory Prayer attempts to provide answers to questions about the nature of intercessory prayer. Critically examining biblical teaching and modern theological and philosophical thinking, this book shows how intercessory prayer may be seen as one of the means by which God enlists the freely-given cooperation of human persons in the realisation of the divine purpose. Clements-Jewery adopts a process view of the universe to show how intercession both makes certain possibilities greater and strengthens the likelihood of response, so that people who pray may have every confidence that their prayers will make a difference to the world through the God who both influences and is influenced by the creation.

Summary Book Review Intercessory Prayer and the Monastic Ideal in the Time of the Carolingian Reforms by Renie S. Choy:

Download or read book Intercessory Prayer and the Monastic Ideal in the Time of the Carolingian Reforms written by Renie S. Choy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early medieval Europe, monasticism constituted a significant force in society because the prayers of the religious on behalf of others featured as powerful currency. The study of this phenomenon is at once full of potential and peril, rightly drawing attention to the wider social involvement of an otherwise exclusive group, but also describing a religious community in terms of its service provision. Previous scholarship has focused on the supply and demand of prayer within the medieval economy of power, patronage, and gift exchange. Intercessory Prayer and the Monastic Ideal in the Time of the Carolingian Reforms is the first volume to explain how this transactional dimension of prayer factored into monastic spirituality. Renie S. Choy uncovers the relationship between the intercessory function of monasteries and the ascetic concern for moral conversion in the minds of prominent religious leaders active between c. 750-820. Through sustained analysis of the devotional thought of Benedict of Aniane and contemporaneous religious reformers during the reigns of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious, Choy examines key topics in the study of Carolingian monasticism: liturgical organization and the intercessory performances of the Mass and the Divine Office, monastic theology, and relationships of prayer within monastic communities and with the world outside. Arguing that monastic leaders showed new interest on the intersection between the interiority of prayer and the functional world of social relationships, this study reveals the ascetic ideal undergirding the provision of intercessory prayer by monasteries.

Download or read book Scientific and Pastoral Perspectives on Intercessory Prayer written by Larry Van De Creek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people agree that prayer is a central feature of spiritual life. But what is prayer? Scientific and Pastoral Perspectives on Intercessory Prayer: An Exchange Between Larry Dossey, MD, and Health Care Chaplains explores common questions and concerns about intercessory prayer, or the act of praying for the benefit of others, from several different points of view. Chaplains, priests, ministers, and clergy in the health care profession will learn how prayer is examined from sources other than traditional Christian views, such as parapsychology. From Scientific and Pastoral Perspectives on Intercessory Prayer, you will learn what prayer means to some chaplains and to their ministry and how prayer can make drastic changes in the lives of your parishioners, patients, and their families. Written by eight chaplains, the articles in this text are in response to an essay by Larry Dossey, a nationally known physician who speaks and writes about prayer. The contributors to Scientific and Pastoral Perspectives on Intercessory Prayer discuss his points of view on intercessory prayer, which are based on quantum physics. You will learn if this area of physics can make a difference in how you practice your faith, how you worship, and what you think about or expect from prayer. Scientific and Pastoral Perspectives on Intercessory Prayer examines several other topics related to prayer, including: discovering whether or not intercessory prayer is truly different from other methods of meditation exploring the relationship between intercessory prayer and meditative or praise prayer linking prayers and their results to the expectations or intentions of those who engage in them differentiating between an intercession and a wish deciding for yourself what constitutes evidence or proof when discussing the aspects of prayer how our opinion of prayer relates to how we think about the universe and about God Since Scientific and Pastoral Perspectives on Intercessory Prayer focuses on the cooperation between science and theology, you will discover that, in many instances, people believe that the power of prayer should be taken seriously. This text also shows you how the questions and functions of prayer are shared by everyone, despite religious differences or methods of praying. Encompassing research and personal experiences, Scientific and Pastoral Perspectives on Intercessory Prayer will help you answer questions about religion and its role in the lives of parishioners, patients, and clergy, as well as provide you with evidence to the positive and healing power of prayer.

Prayer is not a form or fashion, but a way of life. Prayer should be with you at a drop of a hat. In other words, if someone says or ask you to pray, you should be ready and not giving excuses. This is what prayer will do: P.R.A.Y.E.R. Picking up the pieces Restoration of the soul Almighty God at work Yielding to God’s purpose Entering his courts with thanksgiving and praise Resting in his divine presence As you are praying for others; God is restoring you and everything that pertains to you, so that he alone can get the glory out of your life and the lives of those that are around you. So therefore pray without ceasing. There is power in prayer. Remember these three words: Prayer, Praise, & Power. After you have prayed about it, give God the praise and he will show up and show out with all power.
