Book excerpt: What if the best thing to happen in your life came at the worst possible time? Elizabeth was running from the worst thing to ever happen in her crappy life of hard work and regrets, and in the scope of monumental mistakes – she’s just made the monster of them all. Daring to stop at a quaint little seaside town on the way to lose herself in a big city, Elizabeth unexpectedly saves a child from drowning. Since the death of his wife, James has thrown himself into work. Which is why he didn’t see Madeline fall off the pier and into the freezing water. James can’t leave a shivering stranger on the deserted beach in mid-winter weather and offers dry clothing and a hot shower. What he didn’t expect was the part of his soul that died with his wife to re-awaken, or for his daughter to blossom into the carefree child she always should have been. He’s attracted to Elizabeth, but for the sake of his daughter, Elizabeth can only be a forbidden temptation despite how much he wishes it to be different. Being broke and stranded in a luxury mansion wasn’t part of Elizabeth’s plan. She also didn’t expect her suspicious and distrustful heart to be seized by a shy little girl, or her aloof, sexy father. As Elizabeth is drawn into a world where she’s understood, safe and cared for, her past catches up with her. Can she fight for the life she only dared dreamed about – or risk losing it all. Singing for his Kiss explores family, friendship, bad choices, self-forgiveness and second-chance love.

Summary Book Review The Kiss and its History by Kristoffer Nyrop:
Download or read book The Kiss and its History written by Kristoffer Nyrop and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A kiss is produced by a kind of sucking movement of the muscles of the lips, accompanied by a weaker or louder sound. Thus, from a purely phonetic point of view, a kiss may be defined as an inspiratory bilabial sound, which English phoneticians call the lip-click, i.e., the sound made by smacking the lip. This movement of the muscles, however, is not of itself sufficient to produce a kiss, it being, as you know, employed by coachmen when they want to start their horses; but it becomes a kiss only when it is used as an expression of a certain feeling, and when the lips are pressed against, or simply come into contact with, a living creature or object. The sound which follows a kiss has been carefully investigated by the Austrian savant, W. von Kempelen, in his remarkable book entitled The Mechanism of Human Speech (Wien, 1791). He divides kisses into three sorts, according to their sound. First he treats of kisses proper, which he characterises as a freundschaftlich hellklatschender Herzenskuss (an affectionate, clear-ringing kiss coming from the heart); next he defines the more discreet, or, from an acoustic point of view, weaker kiss; and, lastly, speaks contemptuously of a third kind of kiss, which is designated an ekelhafter Schmatz (a loathsome smack). Many other writers have, although in a less scientific manner, sought to define and elucidate the sound that arises from a kiss. Johannes Jørgensen says very delicately in his Stemninger that "the splash of the waves against the pebbles of the beach is like the sound of long kisses." It is generally, however, an exclusively humorous or satirical aspect that is most conspicuous. In the Seducer's Diary(Forførerens dagbog) of Sören Kierkegaard, Johannes speaks of the engaged couples who used to assemble in numbers at his uncle's house: "Without interruption, the whole evenings through, one hears a sound as if a person was going round with a fly-flap: that is the lovers' kisses." A still more drastic comparison is found in the German expression, "the kiss sounded just like when a cow drags her hind hoof out of a swamp." This metaphor, which is used, you know, by Mark Twain, is as graphic as it is easy of comprehension; whereas, on the other hand, I am somewhat perplexed with regard to an old Danish expression that is to be found in the Ole Lade's Phrases (Fraser): "He kissed her so that it rang just as it does when one strikes the horns off felled cows." Another old author speaks of kissing that sounds as if one was pulling the horn out of an owl. The emotions expressed by this more or less noisy lip-sound are manifold and varying: burning love and affectionate friendship, exultant joy and profound grief, etc., etc.; consequently there must be many different sorts of kisses. The austere old Rabbis only recognised three kinds of kisses, viz.: those of greeting, farewell, and respect. The Romans had also three kinds, but their classification was essentially at variance with the Rabbis': they distinguished between oscula, friendly kisses, basia, kisses of love, and suavia, passionate kisses.

Download or read book The Kiss written by Kathryn Harrison and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-05-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exquisitely and hypnotically written, like a bold and terrifying dream, The Kiss is breathtaking in its honesty and in the power and beauty of its creation. In this extraordinary memoir, one of the best young writers in America today transforms into a work of art the darkest passage imaginable in a young woman's life: an obsessive love affair between father and daughter that began when Kathryn Harrison, twenty years old, was reunited with a parent whose absence had haunted her youth. A story both of taboo and of family complicity in breaking taboo, The Kiss is also about love—about the most primal of love triangles, the one that ensnares a child between mother and father. Praise for The Kiss “I couldn’t stop reading this. I’ll never stop remembering it.”—Mary Karr, author of The Liars’ Club “Only a writer of extraordinary gifts could bring so much light to bear on so dark a matter, redeeming it with the steadiness of her gaze and the uncanny, heartbreaking exactitude of her language.”—Tobias Wolff, author of This Boy’s Life “Beautifully written . . . jumping back and forth in time yet drawing you irresistibly toward the heart of a great evil.”—The New York Times “Like all good literature, The Kiss illuminates something that we knew already, while also teaching us things we had not even suspected.”—Los Angeles Times “A darkly beautiful book, fearless and frightening, ironic and compassionate.”—Mary Gordon, author of Circling My Mother “Harrison’s story is her own, but it is also a brilliant fiction, densely mythic, sometimes almost liturgical sounding and raw. She is both author and protagonist of a dark pilgrim’s progress.”—The Atlanta Journal and Constitution
