Book excerpt: The book “GREEDY BUSINESS” is a satire directed at human behaviour, particularly in regards to human priorities to choose between acts of humanitarianism and greed. The author notes that politics indeed is part and parcel of life but no where is it so vividly portrayed than in education and at the work place to satisfy human obsession with greed. Then he admitted, I cannot deny my role in that but that cannot justify it. As individuals we allow Greed to Triumph Morality without humanitarian consideration for others in our efforts to improve quality of our life and that is inexcusable. This book is therefore about that aspect of human thinking that can justify individuals doing things to others that they would not like others to do them. I wonder how many of us find the necessity to take a step backward to explore the choices we have made to do the things we have done to others that we would not like to be done to us because if done to us they would likely destroy our quality of life. Yet some how, some of us can justify some of the things we do to others as the result of the choices we have made without humanitarian consideration for them in the name of improving quality of our lives at the expense of our victims. Well! I did take a step backward and my observations suggest that human’s obsession with Greed confirms why we do the things to others that we would not like to be done to us. Our tendency to want more and more at the expense of others without humanitarian consideration for the quality of life of others has blinded our moral responsibility to be fair. The purpose of writing this book is therefore to share my observations and thoughts with others in the hope that they too may find the need to take a step backward and explore the choices made in the past to do certain things to others that they would not like others to do to them.

Download or read book More COMMON Sense written by Ken English and published by WestBowPress. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America is no longer the “Home of the Brave and Land of the Free.” Americans are being stripped of our blood-bought rights and freedoms by greedy and incompetent politicians. Excessive taxes are reducing average citizens to government slaves. Gross mismanagement of our tax dollars and senseless borrowing from other countries are bankrupting America. An effort to redistribute wealth has instead resulted in a distribution of poverty. There are two houses that need attention in America today. One is the White House. The other is “Our House,” the American home. By correcting the problems that emanate from these houses, we will solve a multitude of problems. This book offers realistic and Common—Sense solutions for many of the evils that threaten to destroy America. These solutions are presented using humorous stories from the Author’s past and well-researched statistics on education, welfare, and government policy. “Common-sense needs to be renamed, uncommon sense because we now live in a country that doesn’t seem to have it anymore. Those who have common-sense today almost possess a super power! This book does a great job of revisiting and hopefully teaching a new generation the power of common-sense.” Rick Burgess. Co-host of the Rick and Bubba Show “Ken English has written a treatise on America that everyone who loves this country needs to read. Not only is it a work outlining the underlying problems we must address in our generation, but also, it is a book that offers solutions-solutions that will work! Packed with quotable quips and anecdotal explications, MORE COMMON SENSE is a must-read for every patriot.” Carl Gallups. Author of Magic Man in the Sky.

Download or read book Need and Greed written by Stewart L. Weisman and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1999-12-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than just a tale of manipulated financial statements, counterfeit securities, sham transactions, and cyber fraud, this story is intertwined with personalities from among the rich and famous who were involved, in some fashion, such as Governor George Pataki, actress Debbie Reynolds, attorney F. Lee Bailey, and the former chairman of the SEC. In the largest pyramid scheme in American history, the Bennett Companies which even looted their own employee's pension fund, fleeced more than 12,000 investors, 10,000 trade creditors, and 245 banks and financial institutions, of more than $1 billion. A Ponzi scheme-named for Charles Ponzi, who enticed investors with promises of high returns to purchase worthless coupons in the 1920s- was taken to new heights in the 1990s by the Bennett Companies. Extensively documented, Need and Greed follows the human drama as a small-time scam grows exponentially into nationwide holdings of hotels, floating and fixed casinos, office buildings, shopping malls, and other investments. It also allows the reader a rare view into the inner workings of big-time crime, its prosecution, and subsequent civil litigation. Throughout the book, Weisman includes vignettes about hapless investors, portraits of the Bennetts and other key players, the corporate culture at Bennett Funding, and the trappings of the lush Bennett lifestyle.

This book was released on 2006-05-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tale of obsession so fierce that a man kills the thing he loves most: the only giant golden spruce on earth. When a shattered kayak and camping gear are found on an uninhabited island in the Pacific Northwest, they reignite a mystery surrounding a shocking act of protest. Five months earlier, logger-turned-activist Grant Hadwin had plunged naked into a river in British Columbia's Queen Charlotte Islands, towing a chainsaw. When his night's work was done, a unique Sitka spruce, 165 feet tall and covered with luminous golden needles, teetered on its stump. Two days later it fell. As vividly as John Krakauer puts readers on Everest, John Vaillant takes us into the heart of North America's last great forest.

Book excerpt: A young Amish boy ventures from Pennsylvania to California in this richly imagined historical novel from the author of An Unseemly Wife. Pennsylvania, 1867. Growing up among the Amish, eleven-year-old Joshua knows that his father is a respected church deacon who has the ear of God. But he’s also seen his father’s weakness for drink, and borne the brunt of his violent rages. In the aftermath of a disastrous fire, Joshua fears his father’s reprimand enough to run away from home. Having never experienced the ways of the English, Joshua now embarks on a decade-long journey to California, where he’s heard it’s always summer. His mother, Miriam, is forced to take on the unusual role of head of the family when her husband is unable to recover physically, emotionally, or spiritually from the fire. As mother and son each find themselves in uncharted territory, they must draw on strength and forgiveness from within. Urged by everyone to accept her son’s death, Miriam never gives up hope of seeing Joshua again. But even as her prayers are answered so many years later, Joshua’s reunion will require him to face his father once more... READERS GUIDE INCLUDED
