Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dipesh Chakrabarty s eagerly anticipated book examines the politics of history through the careerand in many ways tragic fateof the distinguished historian Sir Jadunath Sarkar (1870-1957). One of the most important scholars in India during the first half of the twentieth century, Sarkar was knighted in 1929 and is still the only Indian historian to have ever been elected an Honorary Fellow of the American Historical Association. He was a universalizing and scientific historian, highly influential during much of his career, but, by the end of his lifetime, he became marginalized by the history establishment in India. History, Chakrabarty writes, sometimes plays truant with historians: by the 1970swhen Chakrabarty himself was a novice historianSarkar was almost completely forgotten. Through Sarkar s story, Chakrabarty explores the role of historical scholarship in India s colonial modernity and throws new light on the ways that postcolonial Indian historians embraced a more partisan idea of truth in the name of democratic and anti-colonial politics."

Download or read book War, Culture and Society in Early Modern South Asia, 1740-1849 written by Kaushik Roy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the role of the British East India Company in transforming warfare in South Asia has been overestimated. Although it agrees with conventional wisdom that, before the British, the nature of Indian society made it difficult for central authorities to establish themselves fully and develop a monopoly over armed force, the book argues that changes to warfare in South Asia were more gradual, and the result of more complicated socio-economic forces than has been hitherto acknowledged. The book covers the period from 1740, when the British first became a major power broker in south India, to 1849, when the British eliminated the last substantial indigenous kingdom in the sub-continent. Placing South Asian military history in a global, comparative context, it examines military innovations; armies and how they conducted themselves; navies and naval warfare; major Indian military powers - such as the Mysore and Khalsa kingdoms, the Maratha confederacy - and the British, explaining why they succeeded.

Summary Book Review From Hydaspes to Kargil by Kaushik Roy:

Download or read book From Hydaspes to Kargil written by Kaushik Roy and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warfare has determined the fate of India from the dawn of civilization. Battles like Tarain and Panipat have altered the course of history. The army has always been one of the biggest government employers and the military constituted the principal item of expenditure for the state. Nevertheless, military history remains marginal within the academic discourse. In this volume the aim is to show the interaction between war as an institution and society. Along with society, ecology remains a crucial integer in shaping the scope and mode of warfare. A long duree approach along with cross-cultural comparisons is undertaken for understanding the specificity of Indian military history. This book is a work of synthesis and argues that several Military Revolutions had occurred outside India since the time of Alexander. None the less such developments by themselves were unable to guarantee military success to the foreigners due to specific conditions within the Indian theatre of warfare. Only those powers which were able to synthesize the elements of Military. Revolutions with the traditional Indian System of Warfare, were able to dominate the subcontinent. This book also contains guidelines for contemporary military management. Hence it is hped that this volume will not only be useful from a strictly academic perspective but would also be of interest to the policy makers.
