This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the organization and structure of the church in America was altered in the early 1900s to meet modern demands, the role of the pastorate became more specialized to adapt to the burdens of the new, "efficient" structure. In 1920, Gaines Dobbins utilized the business efficiency model at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary to formulate a distinct ecclesiology. Discontent with traditional methods of instruction in theological education, Dobbins sought to implement theories and methodologies from modern educationalists. He adopted a psychologized educational methodology and utilized the psychology of religion as an empirical measure of the soul, human nature, and human behavior. Use of the social sciences seemed to grant Dobbins, as a practitioner, academic respectability within the realm of theological education. Both the professionalization that resulted from Dobbins's efficiency standards, and a working theory of human nature derived from psychological models, were synthesized into a specialized system of pastoral care. Dobbins followed the new shape of pastoral theology in America, adopting Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) as the model for pastoral training. As a result, CPE became an integral part of the curriculum at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for over sixty years, and spread to influence many other SBC entities.
Summary Book Review Christian Education: Its History and Philosophy by Kenneth O. Gangel:
Download or read book Christian Education: Its History and Philosophy written by Kenneth O. Gangel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2002-03-05 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÒA history of Christian education must not be confused with a record of the achievements of the Sunday School. The discipline has advanced well beyond that stage, and today's sophisticated students fully understand that no proper concept of the history and philosophy of Christian education can be gained without seeing all the ramifications, implications, and influences that have affected it from pre-Christian times to the present.Ó So Drs. Gangel and Benson have written this book, a historical flow of philisophical thought from a Christian point of view. Its focus is cultural-biographical, discussing each philosophy in its particular socio-historical setting, and giving special attention to significant individuals. The format is chronological, beginning with education in biblical times, working upward through history to arrive at the present - and beyond, raising questions and issues for the future.

Book excerpt: Creating an amalgamation of nursing, education and philosophy is one of the distinctive features of this book. While each of these disciplines is well established in their academic endeavors, the book provides a unique voice of nursing in the analysis of philosophy’s role in education. To that end, the book features nurses’ critiques of leading philosophers who have very valuable lessons for health care education. Each chapter has been written to capture aspects of the heart, mind and soul of nursing as appreciated through an exploration of a foremost philosopher. The contributors investigate their scholar’s history, the essential features and examination of their work and offer pragmatic discussion questions based upon their work. Personal transcendence of the authors occurred as an unexpected byproduct of their immersion with the philosophers. This book provides philosophical underpinnings of health care education that nurses, nursing educators, clinical specialists and general healthcare educators as well as academic faculty will appreciate.
