This book was released on 2020-07-18 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book positions itself at the intersection of the interrelationship between three key areas of initial teacher education: constructivist learning theories, teaching practicum, and the promotion of reflective practices. It presents an innovative approach to teacher preparation at undergraduate and postgraduate levels by critically examining the implementation of a mandatory experiential learning block across subject disciplines on undergraduate and postgraduate teacher preparation courses. This book presents multiple examples and case studies of these varied experiential learning projects that will inform academics, teachers and policymakers. Through these rich examples the authors set out to address the theory-practice dilemma in teacher education, where teachers-to-be are often positioned as ‘consumers’ of educational research in classrooms, read reference books and academic papers on teaching, and observe university and school experts before applying the same acquired theories and practices in their own classes. In the book the authors argue for a shift away from this conventional teacher-learning curriculum that is characterised by the separation of theory and practice, choosing instead to promote pedagogy and methods courses where practice underpins all learning. These pedagogical perspectives include the promotion of a diverse range of learning contexts (including on- and off-campus learning sites) for student teachers to experience during their time on teacher education courses.

Summary Book Review Collaborative Approaches to Recruiting, Preparing, and Retaining Teachers for the Field by Peterson-Ahmad, Maria:

This book was released on 2022-01-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teacher retention is an area of great concern across the globe as it appears many teachers leave the field after only a few years, especially those serving low-income students. There is a growing gap from preparation to practice. Not only must educator preparation programs (EPPs) be diligent in utilizing systematically effective methods of preparing novice teachers, but schools must also be cognizant of the need for continued mentorship and quality professional development that matches the unique needs of their novice teachers. When novice teachers enter the profession, they must be offered explicit and scaffolded opportunities for continued learning in order to bridge the theoretical aspects of teaching learned in a preparation program to the practical application of a classroom/school setting, as these opportunities differ from the needs of veteran teachers. Collaborative Approaches to Recruiting, Preparing, and Retaining Teachers for the Field provides a collection of theoretical, application, and research-based information regarding a variety of viewpoints and strategies that educator preparation programs must be cognizant of in order to meet the varied and individualized needs of novice teachers so that the academic, behavioral, and/or social-emotional needs of their students are effectively supported. Overall, this book recognizes the constant need for improvement within educator preparation programs and school systems, showcases that teacher retention is a concern across the United States and globally, and shows how educator preparation programs and schools/districts must reach across the boundaries of content-specificity and collaborate to prepare teacher candidates most effectively. Covering topics such as teacher retention, collaborative partnerships, and growth mindset, this book is essential for educational preparation faculty, educational leadership faculty, P-12 general and special education teachers, administrators, government officials, pre-service teachers, students, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: The first of its kind, Teacher Education across Minority-Serving Institutions brings together innovative work from the family of institutions known as minority-serving institutions: Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions. The book moves beyond a singular focus on teacher racial diversity that has characterized scholarship and policy work in this area. Instead, it pushes for scholars to consider that racial diversity in teacher education is not simply an end in itself but is, a means to accomplish other goals, such as developing justice-oriented and asset-based pedagogies.

This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much research has been done on experiential learning opportunities in study abroad settings, there are fewer publications devoted to experiential learning in the domestic context. This volume aims to fill that gap by providing a collection of chapters highlighting research-based innovations in experiential learning in domestic settings. The book focuses on three experiential learning contexts: community engagement experiences, professional engagement experiences and other unique experiential contexts such as language camps and houses. The collection focuses on the US context but the research projects and curricular innovations described here can serve as models for educators working in other local contexts and will encourage interested practitioners to explore experiential learning opportunities in their local areas. It will also provide the reader with a better understanding of this growing field of inquiry and should appeal to graduate students and researchers who are interested in experiential language learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Reflections on Teacher Education argues that educational philosophy can improve the quality of teacher education programs in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The book documents the ways in which the market model of education propagated by governments and outside agencies hastens the decline of philosophy of education and turns teachers into technicians in hierarchical school systems. A grounding in educational philosophy, however, enables future teachers to make informed and qualified judgements defining their professional lives. In a clear and accessible style, Howard Woodhouse uses a combination of reasoned argument and narrative to show that educational philosophy, together with Indigenous knowledge systems, forms the basis of a climate change education capable of educating future teachers and their students about the central issue of our time.
