Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covenant and Commandment at first seeks to establish that the heart of Hebrew faith and thought is a vision of God as one who makes covenants - with Israel, with all humankind, and, indeed, with the whole creation. As a covenant-maker, God binds himself through his promises. It is Israel's conviction that God is the kind of God who makes promises and keeps them. This conviction, as Christian contends, has given creative power and shape to the whole of Hebrew and Christian history. As the books continues, C. W. Christian contends that the Hebrew law, especially that expression called the Ten Commandments, can best be understood as a joyful response to God's covenant grace, a response that embraces every aspect of our being: community with God, with each other, and with God's world. Each of the commandments is then examined to discover how it may provide guidance in living unto God and in human community.Covenant and Commandment is ideal for either personal or group study on the nature and use of the Ten Commandments. A study guide with relevant questions is provided for reflection and discussion.

Summary Book Review The Ten Commandments by Joseph P. Hester:

Download or read book The Ten Commandments written by Joseph P. Hester and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The founders of the United States were well aware of religious differences in the new nation. Oppression had forced varied European religious groups to seek homes elsewhere, some in the new world of America. Governmental pressures toward conformity in religion had in the past led to corruption and civil strife. Thus, Congress made a dual assertion in its First Amendment to the Constitution: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." However, the ethical foundations of American society--and therefore its laws--intermingle with the moral codes of religions, including the Judeo-Christian Ten Commandments. This handbook helps bring understanding and meaning to the controversies that have arisen in present day society over the application of the Ten Commandments to public law and moral problems. Applications can be logical and legal, or can violate the separation of church and state called for in the First Amendment. Part One provides background on the Ten Commandments. It gives the various versions found in the Old Testament, and explains the non-Israelite influences on those versions (the Hammurabi Code, for example). The moral thinking of the ancient Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Hebrew cultures is examined. The modern Jewish tradition is detailed, as well as the different interpretations placed on the Ten Commandments by Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans and other Protestants. Part Two focuses on the modern controversies, assessing the differing sides of each. Among the many controversies covered are government funding of faith-based charities, posting the Ten Commandments in public buildings, science versus religion in schools, prayer in public places, blue laws, stem cell research, cloning, euthanasia, capital punishment, abortion and war, racial profiling and covenant marriages.

Summary Book Review The Ten Commandments: Introducing Armageddon by Debora Roth Brewer:

Download or read book The Ten Commandments: Introducing Armageddon written by Debora Roth Brewer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2006-06-16 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS: Introducing Armageddon is Debora Roth Brewer’s first published work that details the controversial ten covenant commandments from G-D to the Jewish nation of Israel. The author makes a distinction between the first spoken articles of the Law of G-D and these ten covenant commandments by defining the two Hebrew words, ‘mitsvah’, and ‘dabar’ that are translated into the English word ‘commandments’. Taking the reader on an in-depth study, starting with preparation of the children of Israel to receive G-d´s Law from Mount Sinai in the book of Exodus chapter Nineteen, the secret to unlocking Armageddon is found in scripture. The first ten articles of the Law of G-d found detailed in Exodus Chapter 20 is what is traditionally accepted by the known Church world as ‘the ten commandments’. As the reader embarks on a biblical study it is discovered that G-D calls another passage of scripture from Exodus the tenets of His covenant with Moses & Israel, and specifically names these words “the ten commandments”. Without undermining the importance of today’s “ten commandments”, Debora Roth Brewer challenges the reader to delve deeper into the word of G-d to discover the covenant between G-d and the nation of Israel that is just now being revealed by the Spirit of G-d. Spurred on by a “what does it matter” attitude from fellow Christians, and direct opposition from denominational mind-sets, the author cried out to GOD for inspiration. The LORD took her on a journey through His Word. From Moses to Zephaniah and from Jesus to John the Revelator, this book will challenge the Biblical novice, and also intrigue the doctors of the law. This book is not for the lukewarm at heart toward the things of G-d, but is aimed at those whose opinions are either hot or cold. If you have a definite opinion about the nation of Israel, about Christianity in general, or about the second coming of CHRIST, this book is for you.

Download or read book Israel and the Covenants in New Testament Times written by Peter Williams and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bible student reference A New Testament prophecy of a falling away from truth into apostasy and lawlessness, in the final generation before Jesus Christ returns in glory, is being fulfilled now and is shortly to end. Yet Christianity has overwhelmingly moved so far from its first century roots that it could not even recognise this – or that Christ’s return is therefore now almost upon us! How and why this is the case is here explained thoroughly and logically with many examples directly from the word of God. In God’s saving plan for the world, everyone must in time make a free will choice to become part of the ‘Israel of God’ in order to access eternal life in the kingdom of God. The route to take is the “strait and narrow” way (Mat 7:13-14) that very few have so far found, and it involves the biblical new and old covenants which both apply to this Israel. Embark on this voyage only if you are willing to: be challenged about some basic Christian preconceptions, be a serious open-minded Bible student, and trust what the Bible teaches - but remember that time is short. “What the Bible has taught me I see as both vital and urgent for our eternal salvation; yet I know of no church or individual theologian who teaches what this book deals with in any substantive way” “Be prepared for major challenges to your understanding just as God has challenged me.” “In the epistles, Paul refers to two Israels whom he calls Israel after the flesh (I Cor 10:18) and the Israel of God (Gal 6:16); I focus mainly on the latter (but I also explain an unexpected but critically important connection between them)” “Dependent on the teaching, nearly all Christian denominations either teach nothing at all on it or almost the opposite of what Scripture repeatedly showed me. Looking back, I find this absolutely staggering!” “Very few [Christians] understand that the new covenant also only applies to Israel (as I will clearly show).” “I no longer believe that the NT [New Testament] can be fully understood without this extra Israel dimension” “Had I felt I could deliver this in a more light-hearted way I would have done so, but its implications are too awesome and fundamental to our eternal life prospects for that”
