Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All signs point to Christian education having lost its theological location and prominence in the life of the Western Protestant church. The Emerging Church movement, as an intentionally postmodern approach to ministry in the contemporary context, may, however, offer insights to reinterpret Christian education. This significant movement in today's church gives Christian education a new interpretive framework that is theologically located at an intersection of doxology and doctrine. In her examination of postmodern faith formation, Wendi Sargeant explores the importance of the Christian worshipping community as the most appropriate setting for Christian education. Practitioners and students will benefit from the ready-to-use teaching and learning matrix, and all those with interest in the formation of faith in themselves and others will draw much from the way Sargeant situates worship as the basis for enhancing Christian formation and ethos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the Christian church in the west in decline, some churches are undergoing difficult transitions as they seek to become relevant, to both themselves and their surrounding cultures. Evangelicalism and the Emerging Church details an ethnographic study of a Vineyard congregation making sense of their Vineyard roots and their growing relationship with the self-proclaimed "emerging church" network. Through a rich account of congregational life and tensions, universal issues are raised such as relating to religious parentage, creating safe places for spirituality, Christian growth and maturity, communication with contemporary culture, and the challenges of identity reconstruction. This book is the first to conduct an academic study of a Vineyard congregation in the United Kingdom.

Download or read book Forgiveness and Hope written by Rachel Henderlite and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-10-26 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tragedy of modern Christian education, the author believes, is that it has been influenced as much by secular philosophies as it has by the gospel. To have a solid basis for an educational program, the church must build upon its own faith--this is the main thrust of her thought. Clearly and concisely, Henderlite lifts up for study some elements of Protestant theology which have been neglected in Christian education. As she examines these beliefs she indicates the effects that would be felt in the church if they were more strongly emphasized. Using the Reformation phrase, justification by faith, as the organizing principle behind her work, the author considers four basic theological problems: the nature of faith, human nature, Christian ehtics, and the meaning of history.

Download or read book Mission Namibia. Challenges and Opportunities for the Church in the 21st Century written by Thorsten Prill (ed.) and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Document from the year 2012 in the subject Theology - Practical Theology, , language: English, abstract: This book contains essays by NETS faculty members who bring with them a rich ministry experience in churches and para-church organisations in Namibia and other countries. Each essay is a sustained reflection on a particular aspect of Christian mission and ministry in Namibia and beyond. Thorsten Prill looks at both the challenges and opportunities for the Church in Namibia. He argues that para-church organisations with their focus on evangelism, church-planting and theological training have a significant role to play. In a second essay he identifies key issues in mission today and challenges churches, mission organisations and mission partners to be caught up in a missionary movement with God. Basilius Kasera demonstrates that the use of traditional African names for God as representatives of the God of the Bible is problematic as it leads to a distorted understanding of the biblical revelation. Such an approach fails to distinguish clearly between the revelation of Yahweh and the idols Africans have always worshipped. In a further article Basilius Kasera discusses the dangers of prosperity gospel teaching for the Namibian Church. Simon Gillham argues that the models and assumptions behind theological education in Africa have been largely imported from the west. Using the biblical metaphor of a tree representing spiritual maturity, he explores what roots, what fruits and what species of theological education might be most appropriate for the African context. Victor Kuligin examines the general state of the Namibian Church in light of the well-known statement that ‘faith without deeds is dead’. He argues that there is a discrepancy between the claim of being a Christian country and the lifestyle and conduct of many Namibian church members. He finds an answer for this disconnect in the second chapter of the New Testament letter of James. Achim Rieger believes that local church leadership should be, first and foremost, trained in the local church – given the socio-economic conditions in Namibia. He shows that the training strategy used by the apostle Paul can be a viable option for the Namibian Church. Spencer Tjijenda examines the spiritual condition of the Herero-Banderu people before and during the missionary period. He argues that the evaluation of pioneer missionary Carl Hugo Hahn was not only true but was also motivated by deep concern and love for this Namibian people group – an attitude that is still relevant for God’s mission in Namibia today.

Summary Book Review Christian Education and the Local Church by James DeForest Murch:

Download or read book Christian Education and the Local Church written by James DeForest Murch and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book helps the local church re-evaluate its program of Christian education. After nearly 2000 years of history it is pertinent to ask whether the church school is still true to the principles of the Master Teacher and of the apostolic church; whether its methods of education and their ultimate results are distinctly and peculiarly Christian, and whether the local church is efficiently reaching humanity with Christian teaching. The author faces these questions from the viewpoint of one who believes that the Bible is inspired, that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that the New Testament church is the pattern church. He evaluates modern educational thought and practice in the searching light of Christian history and principles, and draws some constructive conclusions. The section on methods present a church school for today which offers all the best of modern education in a pattern thoroughly true to the Scriptures..
