Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matilda Tomaryn Bruckner provides the first book-length examination of all four verse continuations that follow Chrétien's unfinished Grail story, a powerful site of rewriting from the late twelfth through the fifteenth centuries. By focusing on the dialogue between Chrétien and the verse continuators, this study demonstrates how the patterns and puzzles inscribed in the first author's romance continue to guide his successors, whose additions and reinventions throw new light back on the problems medieval readers and writers found in the mother text: questions about society and the individual; love, gender relations, and family ties; chivalry, violence, and religion; issues of collective authorship and doubled heroes, interpretation, rewriting, and canon formation. However far the continuations appear to wander from the master text, the manuscript tradition supports an implicit claim of oneness extending across the multiplicity of discordant voices combined in a dozen different manuscript compilations, the varying ensembles in which most medieval readers encountered Chrétien's Conte. Indeed, considered as a group the continuators show remarkable fidelity in integrating his romance's key elements, as they respond sympathetically to the dynamic incongruities and paradoxical structure of their model, its desire for and deferral of ending, its non-Aristotelian logic of 'and/both' in which contiguity forces interpretation and further narrative elaboration. Unlike their prose competitors, the verse continuators remain faithful to the dialectical movement inscribed across the interlace of two heroes' intertwined stories, the contradictory yet complementary spirit that propels Chrétien's decentered Conte du Graal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born out of exhaustive research and study, this volume covers the five major romances in octosyllabic rhyming couplets that may with certainty be ascribed to the 12th-century French writer Chretien de Troyes, and touches on a few minor works that have been attributed to him. Karl Uitti locates Chretien within the theological and philosophical setting of his time; views him as a worker-craftsman who produced stories on demand for his patron; and argues persuasively that he advanced the French language to new heights in his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER The night of October 30, 1995, was like no other in Canadian history. The young, modern nation that the UN Human Development Index had ranked #1 for the two previous years now faced its greatest challenge: the possibility of fracturing as Quebecers made a fateful decision—whether to separate from Canada—in a referendum that pollsters estimated would be as close as close could be. The Quebec-sovereignist juggernaut that began with the creation of the Parti Quebecois in 1968 climaxed in the provincial referendum on October 30th. On that extraordinary evening, Canadians from all walks of life, in every region of the country, sat glued to their television screens as polling results trickled in from across Quebec. Unlike the 1980 referendum, when the victory of the federalist No vote led by Pierre Trudeau was a foregone conclusion, the 1995 race was a dead heat. All evening, the returns pitched and rolled, and anxious Canadians pitched and rolled along with them. In the end, the No vote won by the narrowest of margins, 50.58% to 49.42%. This was no euphoric victory, no easy vindication of Sir John A. Macdonald's federalist dream. Never before had the country come face to face with its own imminent extinction. In The Night Canada Stood Still, Robert Wright revisits the drama and intrigue that brought Quebecers, and indeed all Canadians, to the very edge of this watershed event.

Summary Book Review Nice Work by Claire Hoy:

Download or read book Nice Work written by Claire Hoy and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 1999 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claire Hoy has turned his irascible attention to Canada’s Senate. It’s not a pretty sight. The trial of Senator Eric Berntson that resulted in his conviction for fraud in February 1999, (a result that is being appealed), represents only the most recent in a long line of scandals the Canadian Senate has endured. True, some senators perform work that is constructive and useful, most of it in committees that examine legislation put forward by the House of Commons. But even their defenders admit that these contributions don’t add up to much and note that a declining minority of senators carries the load. Tory Senator Brenda Robertson, vice-chair of the Standing Orders Committee, admitted the party has problems getting senators to attend. “According to my math,” she reported, “in about four years we will have about twenty-five active members in the Senate.” Those are the good ones. The others collect their generous pay, perks, and allowances while they either slack off, actively pursue partisan political advantage for their respective parties, or build wealth for themselves and the corporations on whose boards of directors so many of them sit. There are signs that the end may be approaching. The mammoth battles – of ego and partisan rancour – that marked the second term of the Mulroney government, when the Liberal leader in the Senate set out to sabotage the legislative program of the Tories, marked an undoubted low point in the history of the upper chamber. Whether the Senate can be reformed, however, and what shape reform should take, remain open questions.
