Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A noble individual’s rise from humble beginnings and the struggle between brothers for dominance form two of the basic stories that attract people to literature and history, both personal and global. In How Nicholas Became Santa Claus, Sandra Jo and Darrell R. Troupe, a husband-and-wife writing team, invite readers to enter the world of Nicholas, a boy whose simple life on the farm takes a turn for the adventurous when he makes a discovery. As the only one who can prevent an evil prince from turning against his two brothers and seizing the crown in the wake of their father’s death, Nicholas discovers he has greater depths within himself and more potent connections to the magical Orphic Forest than he knew at the outset. Tapping these wellsprings of strength, Nicholas becomes the champion both of human and oddlings in his daring fight to restore balance and peace to his suffering world. If you find yourself drawn to tales of good vanquishing evil, of the lowly discovering unknown nobility within themselves, and of life in lands where the mundane and magical commingle, then How Nicholas Became Santa Claus will become for you a book that invites you to turn to the next page ... and the next.

Book excerpt: A carpenter’s humorous story of building a cabin on Lake Superior with his family—“part how-to, part memoir and part love story” (Minneapolis Star-Tribune). When carpenter Spike Carlsen and his wife set out, with their recently blended family of five kids, to build a cabin on the north shore of Lake Superior, they quickly realize that painting, parenting, and putting up drywall all come with both frustrations and unexpected rewards. Blending practical information with lively personal memoir, Cabin Lessons tells the wryly funny, heartwarming story of their eventful journey—from buying an unforgiving plot of land on an eroding cliff to finally enjoying the lakeside hideaway of their dreams. “Spike Carlsen’s book . . . chronicles the family’s route from a scenic dream (with a modest budget) to designing and building, to filling the space with family, to a (rejected) blank-check purchase offer from a slickster driving an Italian-made car. And it’s all told in the voice of someone you want to see sitting on the other side of the campfire, sharing a blanket with his wife, dispensing charming tales and life lessons.” —Duluth News Tribune (Minnesota)

Book excerpt: Admiral Charles Stewart's had eleven sea commands during his sixty-three years as an officer in the United States Navy serving fifteen Presidents. Admiral Charles Stewart commanded and sailed most every type of war vessel from sloops to ship-of-the-line war vessels in the nineteenth century. His skills on the seas were demonstrated in his success in many major combat actions with enemy war vessels. Charles Stewart was a statesmen, diplomat, teacher, scholar, and perhaps most important, a man of truth and honor. Charles was the first officer in the United States Navy to bear the title "Admiral." Admiral Charles Stewart fought in the Barbary wars, the War of 1812, the final battle with the Muslim pirates in 1815, as commander-in-chief in the defense of the Pacific (1821) in the breakup of the Spanish held colonies, and the protection of trade in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. He married Delia Tudor in 1813 and they had a son and daughter. The marriage did not last. Stewart's true love was Margaret Smith and they had a son. There was talk about running Charles Stewart for President of the United States beginning in 1840. Admiral Charles Stewart served as a pallbearer on the funeral train of President Lincoln in 1862. United States Navy destroyers and destroyer escorts named after Senior Commodore Charles Stewart. Destroyers were named after distinguished USN/USMC officers and enlisted men such as Charles Stewart. (DD, (Destroyers)-216, DD-291, and DE, (Destroyer Escort)-DE-238 and DE-224 carried Stewart's name.
