Summary Book Review Blessed Are the Peacemakers by Lisa Sowle Cahill:

Download or read book Blessed Are the Peacemakers written by Lisa Sowle Cahill and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2019-03-02 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contribution to the Christian ethics of war and peace. It advances peacebuilding as a needed challenge to and expansion of the traditional framework of just war theory and pacifism. It builds on a critical reading of historical landmarks from the Bible through Augustine, Aquinas, the Reformers, Christian peace movements, and key modern figures like Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Reinhold Niebuhr, and recent popes. Similar to just-war theory, peacebuilding is committed to social change and social justice but includes some theorists and practitioners who accept the use of force in extreme cases of self-defense or humanitarian intervention. Unlike just-war theorists, they do not see the justification of war as part of the Christian mission. Unlike traditional pacifists, they do see social change as necessary and possible and, as such, requiring Christian participation in public efforts. Cahill argues that transformative Christian social participation is demanded by the gospel and the example of Jesus, and can produce the avoidance, resolution, or reduction of conflicts. And yet obstacles are significant, and expectations must be realistic. Decisions to use armed force against injustice, even when they meet the criteria of just war, will be ambiguous and tragic from a Christian perspective. Regarding war and peace, the focus of Christian theology, ethics, and practice should not be on justifying war but on practical and hopeful interreligious peacebuilding.

This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a chronology of major events and characters in the Old and New Testament of the Bible witnessed by God and Jesus his Son. With each such encounter, we learn a little more about the true nature of God and Jesus. God acknowledges that he is the creator of heaven and earth and all of mankind, retaining the right to destroy some or all of it, with or without cause. God does as he pleases and can be judged by no one. Although he espouses righteousness, he will have mercy on whom he will have mercy and compassion upon whom he will have compassion. By his own admission, he is a jealous God, condemning anyone who worships false idols. To disobey him is to have a death wish. In comparison, Jesus is the humble servant of God, sacrificing himself to save mankind. He has nothing but disdain for priests who cloak themselves in raiment to demonstrate their own holiness. The only valid reason for accumulating wealth is to share it with others. aEURoeLove thy neighbor as thyselfaEUR is the most important commandment and one should love his enemies. The Ten Commandments and the Law of Moses should work for man and not vice versa. In any given situation, it should be changed, modified, and even ignored to achieve fairness. Parties should work complaints out for themselves and use courts as a last resortaEUR"forgiveness as a first resort. The Bible contains zero humor, but plenty of fodder to create some: six-hundred-year-old Noah and his family on a Disney cruise with seven pairs of every animal species in the world aboard a 450-foot Ark; LotaEUR(tm)s two daughters getting him drunk and having their way with him; Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II under GodaEUR(tm)s spell as a farm animal for seven years, training as the first Sasquatch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heritage Edition: Some 42 illustrations from a century ago. Unabridged, original text. The Sermon on the Mount is Heaven’s benediction to the world—a voice from the throne of God. It was given to mankind to be to them the law of duty and the light of heaven, their hope and consolation in despondency, their joy and comfort in all the vicissitudes and walks of life. Here the Prince of preachers, the Master Teacher, utters the words that the Father gave Him to speak. This volume also includes inspirational thoughts regarding Christ's teachings regarding the Spirituality of the Law, the True Motive in Service, Not Judging but Doing, and the Lord's Prayer. Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing contains Christ’s greeting, not only to those who believe, but to the whole human family. Throughout all time the words that Christ spoke while on earth will retain their power. Every sentence is a jewel from the treasure house of truth. The principles enunciated in His teaching are for all ages and for all classes of men. With divine energy, Christ expressed His faith and hope as He pointed out class after class as blessed because of having formed righteous characters. Living the life of the Life-giver, through faith in Him, everyone can reach the standard held up in His words. The reader of this volume will receive much encouragement in their walk with God and with their fellow man.

Download or read book Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers written by Philip Schaff and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD marked the beginning of a new era in Christianity. For the first time, doctrines were organized into a single creed. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers did most of their writing during and after this important event in Church history. Unlike the previous era of Christian writing, the Nicene and Post-Nicene era is dominated by a few very important and prolific writers. In Volume VI of the 14-volume collected writings of the Nicenes and Post-Nicenes (first published between 1886 and 1889), readers will find Saint Augustines exegesis on the Gospels and the Sermon on the Mount, which strove to interpret and draw meaning out of the text without incorporating the author's personal agenda or bias. Also included in this volume are a selection of Augustines sermons."
