Summary Book Review In Theaters Everywhere by Brian Hannan:

Download or read book In Theaters Everywhere written by Brian Hannan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-12-26 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflicts among Hollywood studios and exhibitors have been going on for years. At their heart are questions about how films should be released--where, when and at what speed. Both sides of this disagreement are losers, with exhibitors using the law via various Consent Decrees and studios retaliating by tightly controlling output. In the Silent Era, movies were not released nearly as widely as they are now. This book tells the story of how the few became the many. It explores the contraction of the release cycle, the maximization of the marketing dollar, and the democratization of consumer access. It also offers a comprehensive list of wide releases and rebuts much of what previous scholars have found.

Summary Book Review Going Out by David Nasaw:

Download or read book Going Out written by David Nasaw and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1999-04-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Nasaw has written a sparkling social history of twentieth-century show business and of the new American public that assembled in the city's pleasure palaces, parks, theaters, nickelodeons, world's fair midways, and dance halls. The new amusement centers welcomed women, men, and children, native-born and immigrant, rich, poor and middling. Only African Americans were excluded or segregated in the audience, though they were overrepresented in parodic form on stage. This stigmatization of the African American, Nasaw argues, was the glue that cemented an otherwise disparate audience, muting social distinctions among "whites," and creating a common national culture.
