Download or read book 40 Questions About Calvinism written by Shawn D. Wright and published by Kregel Academic. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 40 Questions About Calvinism , church historian Shawn Wright tackles many issues about the theological system known as Calvinism. Taking an irenic approach, Wright explains the key doctrines while also contrasting them with Arminianism. The accessible format allows readers to easily look up topics in which they’re most interested, including: • What is the difference between Calvinism and the Reformed tradition? • Does God love all people? • Did Jesus die for the sins of the whole world? • Can people resist the Holy Spirit? • Do Calvinists practice evangelism and missions? “Here is a book to put into the hands of such inquirers whose understanding of Calvinism may have been formed by those who caricature it. The fact that each chapter is a question helps readers go straight to the issue that is dogging them.” —Conrad Mbewe, Kabwata Baptist Church, Lusaka, Zambia “If you are a non-Calvinist seeking answers about Calvinism, you will find a clear and winsome presentation of the position, as well as a response to some key criticisms. If you are a Calvinist looking for a model of how to talk about these things with non-Calvinists, then you will find a helpful and humble model for explaining the Calvinist position and its points of disagreement with Arminianism, in a fair-minded, evenhanded way.” —Ligon Duncan, Reformed Theological Seminary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nine colleges of colonial America confronted the major political currents of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, while serving as the primary intellectual institutions for Puritanism and the transition to Enlightenment thought. The colleges also confronted the most partisan and divisive cultural movement of the eighteenth century--the Great Awakening. Creating the American Mind is the first book to present a synthetic treatment of the colonial colleges, tracing their role in the intellectual development of early Americans through the Revolution. Distinguished historian J. David Hoeveler focuses on Harvard, William and Mary, Yale, the College of New Jersey (Princeton), King's College (Columbia), the College of Philadelphia (University of Pennsylvania), Queen's College (Rutgers), the College of Rhode Island (Brown), and Dartmouth. Hoeveler pays special attention to the collegiate experience of prominent Americans, including Jefferson, Hamilton, and Madison. Written in clear and engaging prose, Creating the American Mind will be of great value to historians and educators interested in rediscovering the institutions that first fostered American intellectual thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scholarly and original study of the Church of England in the reign of Charles I, Davies's detailed analysis of religious policy and ecclesiastical practice offers a bold new interpretation of the Caroline Church, firmly based on documentary evidence. Davies examines the roles of Charles I and of Archbishop Laud, demonstrating both Laud's essential conservatism in religious matters and Charles's highly personal notion of sacramental kingship which he was attempting to realize through his prerogative as Supreme Governor of the Church. As a vital arm in the political apparatus of the state and as the vehicle for Caroline ideology, the established church under Charles I became more highly politicized than ever before. Julian Davies reassesses the significance of doctrinal Arminianism in the seventeenth-century church, taking issue with a number of scholars. He brings to the forefront of the debate constitutional issues which have recently been underplayed. His book makes an important contribution to a controversial area of historical study.

Summary Book Review Trials of an Ordinary Doctor by Harold John Cook:

Download or read book Trials of an Ordinary Doctor written by Harold John Cook and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 27, 1694, Suzanna Withall and three of her neighbors appeared before the Censors of the London College of Physicians to lodge a complaint against Dr. Joannes Groenevelt. The doctor, according to the women's testimony, had given Withall a "secret remedy" that left her bedridden. When the Censors learned the remedy contained outlawed cantharides - or "Spanish Fly" - they seized what they saw as an opportunity to assert their authority over all London practitioners, including dissenters in their own ranks. The resulting series of legal charges, suits, and countersuits would leave Groenevelt impoverished and the reputation of London physicians subject to public ridicule. Harold J. Cook's microhistory shows how a medical malpractice case against an otherwise obscure Dutch physician in London became the center of one of the era's great medical controversies. Beginning with Groenevelt's boyhood in the provincial city of Deventer, Cook follows Groenevelt through his Dutch medical education, his modest but successful practice in England, his conflict with the medical establishment, and his impoverished old age. He shows how society and politics, as well as the scientific and professional uncertainties and jealousies of the early Enlightenment, helped dictate the course of one man's life - and how the actions he took against those forces helped bring down the authority of the physicians of London.
